Key takeaways
A fasting blood sugar test costs between ₹99 and ₹180 across Redcliffe, Healthians and Orange Health, read in Bangalore in July 2026. It is one of the cheapest tests you can book.
Before paying, check your policy. Most health insurance plans include an annual health check-up, and a blood sugar test is a standard part of it.
A fasting sugar test needs an overnight fast; a post-meal (PP) test is taken after eating. An HbA1c, which needs no fasting, shows your average sugar over months.
Section 80D allows ₹5,000 a year for preventive health check-ups, but it sits inside your existing 80D limit rather than on top of it.

What does a blood sugar test cost in India?

₹99

That is the cheapest of the three national labs we checked, Redcliffe Labs, for a fasting blood sugar test in Bangalore, read July 2026. The dearest, Orange Health, is ₹180. A fasting sugar test is about the cheapest blood test there is.

A fasting blood sugar (FBS) test measures your blood glucose after an 8 to 12 hour fast. A post-meal (PP) test measures it after eating.

The three labs, as listed

LabPrice (Bangalore)
Redcliffe Labs₹99
Healthians₹126
Orange Health Labs₹180

Three labs, one city, one week, and under ₹100 between them because this is a single, simple, high-volume parameter. The higher price buys a faster home visit, not a different test. Prices differ by city and move over time, so treat these as the order of magnitude.

Before you pay it

Most health insurance policies include an annual health check-up, and a blood sugar test is a standard part of it, usually bundled with a CBC and a lipid profile. It is a named benefit in the wording, usually delivered cashless at a listed diagnostic centre, and it is one of the least-claimed benefits in Indian health insurance.

Check your policy schedule before you pay a lab. Our guide to which plans pay for your check-up sets out the terms plan by plan, and health insurance for diabetics covers plans built around this exact need.

Two things worth knowing

Fasting sugar, PP and HbA1c answer different questions. A fasting test is a single morning reading after a fast; a PP test is taken after a meal; an HbA1c shows your average sugar over two to three months and needs no fasting. Doctors often use them together. Which you need, and how to read the result, is a medical decision, not a pricing one.

The tax break is smaller than it sounds. Section 80D allows ₹5,000 a year for preventive health check-ups, and it sits inside your overall 80D limit rather than on top of it. If you are already claiming the full limit on premiums, the check-up adds nothing. The mechanics are in our guide to Section 80D deductions.

FAQs

How much does a blood sugar test cost in India?

Between ₹99 and ₹180 for a fasting blood sugar test across Redcliffe, Healthians and Orange Health, read in Bangalore in July 2026. It is one of the cheapest blood tests. Prices differ by lab and city and change often.

Is a blood sugar test covered by health insurance?

Almost always, as part of the annual health check-up rather than as a claim. Most health policies include a periodic check-up delivered cashless at a listed diagnostic centre, and a blood sugar test is a standard inclusion. It does not reduce your sum insured. Check your own policy schedule for the frequency.

What is the difference between a fasting sugar test and HbA1c?

A fasting blood sugar test measures a single glucose reading after an overnight fast. An HbA1c shows your average blood sugar over the past two to three months and needs no fasting. They answer different questions, and doctors often use both. Which you need is a decision for your doctor.

Can I claim a blood sugar test under 80D?

Up to ₹5,000 a year for preventive health check-ups, which can be paid in cash. The catch is that this ₹5,000 sits within your overall Section 80D limit rather than being added to it, so it only helps if you are under the limit already.

Do I need to fast before a blood sugar test?

For a fasting blood sugar (FBS) test, yes, an 8 to 12 hour fast, usually overnight. A post-prandial test is taken deliberately after a meal, and an HbA1c needs no fasting at all. Follow the instruction your lab gives when you book.
