Term Insurance Complaint Ratio 2026: 20 Life Insurers Ranked
How many customers had to complain to get paid, per 10,000 policies, for every life insurer in India. Settlement ratios here vary by 2.7 percentage points. Complaints vary by 136 times.
Why this number decides more than the settlement ratio
A claim settlement ratio counts how many claims an insurer paid. A complaint ratio counts how many customers had to escalate to be heard. Both are published by IRDAI, and only one of them separates the field.
Across these 20 life insurers the complaint ratio runs from 1.33 to 180.66 per 10,000 policies, a spread of about 135.8 times. The settlement ratios on the same insurers span 2.7 percentage points. One of those columns cannot separate the field. The other varies by orders of magnitude, and it is the one making your decision.
It also catches what the settlement ratio hides. Edelweiss Life settles 99.3% of claims, which reads as excellent, while drawing 167.33 complaints per 10,000 policies · so does Ageas Federal Life, at 97.8% and 109.33. A high ratio and a heavy complaint load sit on the same insurer more often than the industry likes to admit.

Complaints per 10,000 policies, from IRDAI published disclosures as a weighted average of the last three financial years, latest available as of March 2026. Lower is better. An insurer with no published figure shows NA and is left out of the counts rather than being scored as zero.
How to read it without over-reading it
A complaint ratio is a measure of friction, not of fraud. A large insurer selling millions of low-value policies will draw complaints that a small one never sees, and a single bad quarter can move a small insurer's number a long way. Read it as a signal about how much work a claim is likely to be, not as a verdict on the company.
The average across this table is 43.8 complaints per 10,000 policies. An insurer well under that has customers who mostly did not need to escalate. An insurer well over it does not necessarily reject more claims, but its customers are asking for help far more often on the way to being paid.
Neither number tells you whether a plan covers what you need. Room rent caps, disease sub-limits, waiting periods and the restoration terms decide the size of your bill long before the insurer's track record does.
Claim ratio questions, answered
Which life insurer has the fewest complaints?
HDFC Life, at 1.33 complaints per 10,000 policies, the lowest figure in Indian life insurance. Aditya Birla Sun Life follows at 2.33 and IndusInd Nippon Life at 2.90. HDFC Life pairs that with a 99.6% claim settlement ratio, so it leads on both columns at once, which no other life insurer on this table does.
Which life insurer draws the most complaints?
Generali Central Life, at 180.66 complaints per 10,000 policies, roughly 136 times HDFC Life's figure. Edelweiss Life follows at 167.33 and Ageas Federal Life at 109.33. Edelweiss is the instructive one: it settles 99.3% of death claims, a figure that reads as excellent, while drawing more than a hundred times the complaints of the best insurer on the same table.
Why does the complaint ratio matter more for term insurance?
Because the settlement ratio tells you almost nothing here. Life insurer settlement ratios sit between about 96.9% and 99.6%, a spread of under three percentage points, and every plan a reasonable adviser would recommend is inside it. Complaints run from 1.33 to 180.66. When one column cannot separate the field and the other varies 136 times, the second is the one making your decision.
Does a low complaint ratio mean my family's claim will be paid?
It improves the odds of being paid without a fight, which is not the same thing. Death claims are decided mostly on disclosure: an undisclosed illness, income overstated at proposal, or tobacco use left off the form will sink a claim at any insurer on this table. Disclose completely and the insurer's record becomes the thing that matters.
What is a complaint ratio in life insurance?
The number of complaints an insurer received per 10,000 policies it holds, published by IRDAI. It counts every escalation, over a delayed payout, a document loop, a mis-sold policy or a rejection, so it measures how much friction customers met, not how many claims were refused.
Where does this data come from?
IRDAI's published disclosures, taken as a weighted average of the last three financial years so one unusual year does not swing the figure, latest available as of March 2026. Insurers with no published complaint figure show NA and are excluded from the averages rather than being counted as zero.
There is more to a policy than these two numbers
Both figures on this page describe the insurer, across every policy it sells and every customer it has. Neither describes the policy you are about to buy, and neither can tell you whether your claim will be paid.
What decides that sits in the wording: how you answered the medical and financial questions, whether the payout is a lump sum or an income, which riders you took, and whether the policy is past the three years after which Section 45 stops the insurer questioning a claim on non-disclosure. A high settlement ratio does not rescue a claim that falls foul of any of them.
