Key takeaways
MediCare Plus and MediCare Premier do different jobs: Premier is a base health plan you can hold on its own, while Plus is a super top-up that pays only once the year's claims cross its deductible.
Buy MediCare Plus only over cover you already hold, with the deductible set at or just below that cover, because every claim under the deductible is paid by that cover or by you.
Choose MediCare Premier if you want maternity, outpatient and consumables cover from Tata AIG; its 24-month pre-existing wait is also a year shorter than the 36 months on MediCare Plus.
Both plans come from Tata AIG, so the claim record does not separate them; compare them on what each pays for, with quotes for the same total cover.

MediCare Plus or MediCare Premier: which should you buy?

Tata AIG MediCare Plus and MediCare Premier are different kinds of policy, not two tiers of one plan. MediCare Premier is the top of the MediCare range, a base health plan from ₹5 lakh to ₹3 crore with maternity, OPD and consumables built in. MediCare Plus is a super top-up: it pays nothing until the year's claims cross its deductible, then up to ₹50 lakh above a ₹5 lakh deductible.

Both plans come from Tata AIG, so the claim record is the same whichever you buy: Tata AIG settles 89.5% of claims and draws 11.6 complaints per 10,000 claims (IRDAI data, a weighted average of the last three financial years, latest available as of March 2026).

Premiums depend on your age, city and cover, so this page compares what each plan pays for rather than a price. MediCare Plus needs cover underneath it, so the fair comparison is a quote for MediCare Premier against a quote for MediCare Plus plus the policy it sits on, at the same total cover.

How do MediCare Plus and MediCare Premier compare, feature by feature?

MediCare Plus and MediCare Premier share an insurer and a 24-month wait for listed illnesses. They differ on what each policy is for, when it starts paying, how long pre-existing conditions wait and who can join. The first table sets the two side by side; the second lists what MediCare Premier builds in.

What is MediCare Plus, and how is it different from MediCare Premier?

MediCare Plus is Tata AIG's super top-up: it pays only above an annual aggregate deductible, and it sits on top of a policy you already hold rather than replacing one. MediCare Premier, by contrast, is a base plan you can hold on its own. nyvo's policy database holds one more MediCare product, the base MediCare plan, sold from ₹3 lakh to ₹20 lakh.

An annual aggregate deductible counts every claim in the policy year towards the same deductible. Two admissions of ₹3 lakh in one year add up to ₹6 lakh; against a ₹5 lakh deductible, MediCare Plus pays the ₹1 lakh above it, assuming every rupee is admissible. Under a per-claim deductible, neither admission would cross ₹5 lakh and nothing would be paid. Our guide to aggregate and per-claim deductibles works through more examples.

The deductible is paid by the cover underneath or by you. Set it at or just below the cover you already hold, so the two meet without a gap: a deductible well below that cover pays twice for the same rupees, and one well above it leaves a gap neither policy fills. Confirm in the wording how claims paid by the cover underneath count towards the deductible. Our explainer on how top-up and super top-up plans work covers the structure in full.

Where is MediCare Premier the better choice?

MediCare Premier suits a buyer who needs a base plan of their own, wants maternity and outpatient cover included, or wants pre-existing conditions covered a year sooner. Tata AIG sells nothing on it as an add-on, because accidental death, maternity, OPD, air ambulance, high-end diagnostics and consumables are already inside the premium.

  • It works on its own. MediCare Premier pays admissible claims up to its sum insured, with no co-payment and no room rent cap. MediCare Plus pays nothing until the year's claims cross its deductible.
  • A shorter pre-existing disease wait. 24 months, against 36 months on MediCare Plus and on base MediCare.
  • Maternity built in. ₹50,000 on cover up to ₹50 lakh, or ₹60,000 if the baby is a girl, and ₹1 lakh from ₹75 lakh, or ₹1.2 lakh for a girl, after a 36-month wait. Our guide to maternity cover sets limits like these against what a delivery costs.
  • Outpatient and dental cover of ₹5,000 to ₹20,000 a year, set by the sum insured, plus a separate dental limit, after 24 months. Our guide asks whether OPD cover is worth paying for.
  • Consumables and air ambulance included. Consumables are paid up to the sum insured for the insurer's listed items, and air ambulance runs to ₹5 lakh, or the full sum insured at a network provider from ₹75 lakh of cover.
  • A wide family list. Self, spouse, up to 3 children, 2 parents and 2 parents-in-law, plus a multi-individual option that adds grandparents, grandchildren, siblings, other relatives, an employee, domestic help and a legal guardian.

Where does MediCare Plus make more sense?

MediCare Plus suits a buyer who already holds cover close to ₹5 lakh, through a personal policy or an employer, and wants up to ₹50 lakh more for a large bill. Because the deductible counts every claim in the policy year, several admissions can cross it together rather than each one facing it alone.

  • Large cover above what you hold. Up to ₹50 lakh above a ₹5 lakh deductible.
  • The better kind of deductible. An annual aggregate deductible adds up the year's claims; a per-claim deductible makes each admission cross it alone.
  • It can sit over employer cover. MediCare Plus is designed to sit on top of a retail policy or an employer's group cover. If the group cover ends, for example when you change jobs, the deductible is yours to pay until other cover replaces it. Read why employer cover is not enough on its own.

What should you check before buying either plan?

On MediCare Plus the catches sit in the deductible; on MediCare Premier they sit in who can join and in limits that change at ₹75 lakh of cover. Read both lists before you compare quotes, because each one changes what a claim actually pays.

MediCare Plus

  • It needs cover underneath. Every claim below the deductible is paid by that cover or by you, so a year of small claims pays nothing from MediCare Plus.
  • The deductible resets every policy year, so an illness that runs across two policy years crosses it twice.
  • MediCare Plus has its own waiting periods: 36 months for pre-existing conditions and 24 months for listed illnesses. If you raise the cover later, the waits restart on the increase only.
  • nyvo's record holds a ₹5 lakh deductible, and Tata AIG publishes a grid of deductible options, so check the one on your quote against the cover you hold.

MediCare Premier

  • New adults cannot buy it after 65, even at ₹3 crore of cover.
  • Maternity waits 36 months, so buy three years before you plan to use it, and the limit is ₹50,000 up to ₹50 lakh of cover.
  • Post-hospitalisation is 90 days on every cover up to ₹50 lakh; the 200-day window and home care treatment start only at ₹75 lakh.
  • The overseas planned-treatment benefit is unavailable if anyone insured is a foreign national, an NRI or an OCI holder, at purchase or during the policy year. The compensation is a discount of up to 2%.
  • The no-claim bonus halves after a year with a claim, and restoration works once a policy year; for the same illness, the new admission must come at least 45 days after discharge.

Which plan should you choose?

Choose MediCare Premier if you have no health policy of your own, want maternity, OPD and consumables included, or want pre-existing conditions covered after 24 months rather than 36. Of the two, it is the one built to stand alone as your only policy.

Choose MediCare Plus if you already hold a base policy or employer cover close to ₹5 lakh and want up to ₹50 lakh more for a large bill, with the deductible set to meet that cover.

The two can also work together. MediCare Plus is built to sit on top of a retail policy, so a ₹5 lakh MediCare Premier policy and MediCare Plus at a ₹5 lakh deductible meet without a gap.

FAQs

Is Tata AIG MediCare Plus a super top-up?

Yes. MediCare Plus pays only once the claims in a policy year, added together, cross its deductible, and then up to ₹50 lakh above a ₹5 lakh deductible. It is built to sit on top of a policy you already hold, not to replace one.

Do I need another health policy to buy MediCare Plus?

In practice, yes. MediCare Plus pays only above the deductible, so every claim below it is paid by the cover underneath or by you. It is designed to sit on top of a retail policy or an employer's cover.

Is MediCare Plus an upgraded version of MediCare?

No. Despite the name, MediCare Plus is a super top-up, a different kind of policy. MediCare is the base plan, from ₹3 lakh to ₹20 lakh, and MediCare Premier is the top of the range, from ₹5 lakh to ₹3 crore.

What is the pre-existing disease waiting period on MediCare Premier?

24 months, a year shorter than the 36 months on MediCare Plus and on base MediCare. The 24-month wait for listed illnesses is the same on MediCare Premier and MediCare Plus.

Does MediCare Premier cover maternity?

Yes, after a 36-month wait. It pays ₹50,000 on cover up to ₹50 lakh, or ₹60,000 if the baby is a girl, and ₹1 lakh from ₹75 lakh of cover, or ₹1.2 lakh for a girl.

Which plan has the better claim record?

Neither. Both are Tata AIG plans, and the ratios are published per insurer, not per plan: 89.5% of claims settled and 11.6 complaints per 10,000 claims (IRDAI data, a weighted average of the last three financial years, latest available as of March 2026).
