Maternity Insurance With No Waiting Period: The Shortest Waits in India

No health plan you buy yourself covers childbirth from day one. These are the shortest maternity waits we've found, 9 and 12 months, and what each plan actually pays for a delivery.

Key takeaways
A health plan you buy yourself never covers childbirth from day one; the shortest maternity wait we've found is 9 months, so the policy has to start before you start trying.
Among the 9-month options, Care Joy pays up to its ₹3 lakh or ₹5 lakh sum insured while Aspire Titanium+ pays a yearly pot of ₹4,000 to ₹25,000, so compare the payout before the wait.
If you're about a year away, Activ Yuva's maternity add-on with a 1-year wait pays up to ₹2 lakh anywhere in the world, but only when the mother is insured as the primary insured's spouse.
Single buyers can start the clock early: Activ Yuva's add-on and Aspire's Future Ready option both pass a maternity wait you've served to a spouse you add later.

Maternity insurance with no waiting period doesn't exist on a health plan you buy yourself. The shortest wait we've found is 9 months, on Niva Bupa Aspire Titanium+ and on Care Joy's Joy Today plan (each insurer's prospectus, in our policy database, October 2026). After those come two 12-month options, on Aditya Birla Activ Yuva and Star Super Star.

The wait isn't the whole story, though. These plans pay anywhere from ₹4,000 a year to ₹5 lakh for a delivery, so the right one depends on how soon you're planning a baby and how much of the bill you want covered.

Is there any maternity insurance with no waiting period?

No, not on a policy you buy for yourself. Every individual plan we've read makes you hold the maternity cover for a set time before it pays for a delivery. IRDAI's 36-month cap on pre-existing disease waits doesn't apply to maternity, so insurers set the wait themselves: 9 months to 6 years across the plans in our policy database.

The one place you'll find maternity from day one is a group policy. An employer's group health cover is set by the employer's contract and can waive the maternity wait, so ask HR for the maternity clause and the limit before you count on it. It also ends the day you leave the job, which is why we'd still hold a plan of your own, as our note on why corporate cover isn't enough explains.

The reason for the wait is simple. A delivery is the most predictable claim there is. Without a wait, people would buy a policy the month they start trying and claim nine months later, and premiums for everyone would rise to match.

Which plans have the shortest maternity waiting period?

Five plans we've read can pay for a delivery within a year or so of buying. Two of them clear in 9 months; the rest need 12.

PlanShortest waitWhat it pays for a deliveryThe catch
Niva Bupa Aspire Titanium+9 monthsA built-in yearly pot of ₹4,000 to ₹25,000, set by the sum insured; unused amounts carry forwardSmall unless you hold the policy unclaimed for years
Care Joy, Joy Today plan9 monthsUp to the whole ₹3 lakh or ₹5 lakh sum insuredA separate maternity policy sold for three years; the baby's cover ends at 90 days
Aditya Birla Activ Yuva, Worldwide Yuva Maternity Cover1 year (or 2 or 3, your choice)₹1 lakh, ₹1.5 lakh or ₹2 lakh for one delivery, anywhere in the worldA paid add-on taken between 18 and 45; the mother must be insured as the primary insured's spouse
Star Super Star, maternity option B12 months₹30,000 a delivery, up to four in a lifetimeOption A pays ₹50,000 or ₹1 lakh but waits 24 months
ICICI Lombard Elevate, Maternity Benefit24 months, reducible to 12Up to 10% of the sum insured, capped at ₹1 lakhFamily floater only

Aspire, Activ Yuva and Super Star figures are from each insurer's own prospectus or policy wording, read on 24 October 2026. Care Joy and Elevate figures are from our policy database records of their prospectuses. Most other plans that cover maternity wait 24 months or more; our maternity cover guide lists them with what each pays.

If you're planning a family in the next year or two, the order you buy in matters more than the plan you pick. A nyvo advisor can lay the waits against your dates with you, and the call is free.

What does a 9-month wait actually pay?

On Niva Bupa Aspire Titanium+, maternity sits inside a built-in benefit called M-iracle, with its own sum insured on top of your base cover. It pays for antenatal check-ups, the delivery (normal or caesarean), IVF and other assisted reproduction, surrogacy and legal adoption costs, and it covers the newborn from day one. The catch is the size of the pot, which is set by your base sum insured:

Aspire base sum insuredM-iracle pot a year
₹3 lakh₹4,000
₹5 lakh₹5,000
₹7.5 lakh₹10,000
₹10 lakh₹12,000
₹15 lakh₹15,000
₹20 lakh or ₹25 lakh₹20,000
₹50 lakh or ₹1 crore₹25,000

Unused M-iracle carries forward, which is what makes it useful over time. Niva Bupa's own example: a 25-year-old who buys Titanium+ at ₹20 lakh and makes no M-iracle claim for 10 years has ₹2.2 lakh available, ₹20,000 for the year plus ₹2 lakh carried forward. Bought just before you start trying, the same policy has ₹20,000 for a delivery in the first policy year, or ₹40,000 in the second if the first year's pot went unused.

Three conditions sit in the prospectus. M-iracle pays only in India, the biological mother has to be insured on the policy (except for surrogacy or adoption), and every maternity complication is paid from the M-iracle pot alone. Other Aspire variants wait longer for M-iracle, up to 48 months, so make sure the quote says Titanium+.

Care Joy works the other way round. It's a maternity policy in its own right, with a ₹3 lakh or ₹5 lakh sum insured that a delivery can use in full, and a single private A/C room. Joy Today waits 9 months and is issued for three years; Joy Tomorrow waits 24 months. The baby is covered from birth to 90 days, and after that you have to add the child to a regular policy. With only ₹3 lakh or ₹5 lakh on offer, Joy works best next to a regular health plan, not instead of one.

Which plans let you claim maternity after 12 months?

Aditya Birla's Activ Yuva sells maternity as an add-on, Worldwide Yuva Maternity Cover, and lets you choose the wait: one, two or three years. It pays ₹1 lakh, ₹1.5 lakh or ₹2 lakh for one delivery, normal or caesarean, anywhere in the world, with 180 days of care before and after the birth, IVF and other assisted reproduction, egg freezing up to 30% of the maternity sum insured, and up to ₹50,000 of legal adoption costs. A claim doesn't touch the base sum insured. Newborn cover for the first 90 days is a further option, at ₹50,000, ₹1 lakh or ₹2 lakh.

Two conditions in the Activ Yuva wording matter. You can add the cover only between 18 and 45. And it pays only when the mother is insured as the legally married spouse of the primary insured, so the policy should be in her husband's name with her on it. There's a useful twist for single buyers: a wait you serve on your own is credited to your spouse when you add them.

Star Super Star sells two maternity options. Option B waits 12 months and pays ₹30,000 a delivery; option A waits 24 months and pays ₹50,000 or ₹1 lakh. Both allow up to four deliveries in a lifetime with no fresh wait after the first, and both cover the newborn from birth to the end of the policy year, up to ₹2 lakh on ₹5 lakh to ₹25 lakh cover and ₹5 lakh above that. You can add maternity at a renewal too, but the wait then runs from the day you add it.

ICICI Lombard Elevate's Maternity Benefit waits 24 months, reducible to 12, and pays up to 10% of the sum insured, capped at ₹1 lakh, with newborn cover and first-year vaccinations available alongside. It's for family floaters only, can be added at a renewal, and can't be combined with Elevate's HER women's-care add-on.

When do you need to buy for the wait to clear?

The delivery has to fall after the wait ends, and the wait runs from the day the maternity cover starts. In practice that means buying before you start trying. Here's how it works for a policy that starts on 1 November 2026 and a baby conceived in December 2026, due around September 2027:

Maternity waitDelivery covered fromThe September 2027 baby
9 months1 August 2027Covered
12 months1 November 2027Not covered, born inside the wait
24 months1 November 2028Not covered

So on a 12-month wait, the earliest pregnancy you can plan around is one that starts about three months after you buy. If you're a year or more from trying, the 12-month options open up. If you're two years or more away, the plans with 24-month waits and bigger payouts are worth comparing too. Our guide to waiting periods explains how the other clocks in a policy run.

Can I buy maternity cover once I'm already pregnant?

You can buy a health policy if the insurer accepts you, but none of the plans we've read will pay for the delivery you're expecting. The pregnancy is a disclosure on the proposal form, and even the shortest maternity wait is longer than what's left of it.

Star Super Star's Women Care option is the one route we've read for a woman who is already pregnant. She applies with her 12-week and 20-week scan reports, and if Star accepts the proposal, the newborn is covered from birth to the end of the policy year, and for congenital defects up to the sum insured. The delivery itself still isn't covered. Your employer's group policy is the place to look for that, and our guide to health insurance for pregnancy covers the rest, including a newborn insurance checklist for the first 90 days.

Which short-wait plan should you pick?

It comes down to how far away you are.

  • Trying within the next few months: Care Joy's Joy Today, if ₹3 lakh or ₹5 lakh is enough, because it's the only 9-month option that pays a sizeable amount for one delivery. Aspire Titanium+ clears in the same 9 months, but at ₹20 lakh cover its first-year pot is ₹20,000.
  • About a year away: Activ Yuva's add-on with a 1-year wait pays up to ₹2 lakh anywhere in the world, as long as the policy is in the husband's name. Super Star's 12-month option pays ₹30,000.
  • Two years or more away, or not sure yet: choose the health plan on its own merits and treat maternity as a tiebreaker. Far more plans open up at 24 months, and our Aspire vs ReAssure comparison shows how much the rest of a plan matters next to its maternity pot.
  • Single and planning ahead: Activ Yuva's add-on and Aspire's Future Ready option both pass the maternity wait you've served to a spouse you add later. On Aspire, the spouse has to be added within 90 days of the marriage.

FAQs

Is there maternity insurance with no waiting period in India?

No, not on a health plan you buy yourself. The shortest maternity wait we've found is 9 months, on Niva Bupa Aspire Titanium+ and Care Joy's Joy Today plan. An employer's group policy can waive the wait, so check your group policy's maternity clause with HR before you buy anything for the delivery.

Which health insurance has a 9-month maternity waiting period?

Niva Bupa Aspire Titanium+ and Care Joy's Joy Today plan, among the plans we've read. Aspire builds maternity into a yearly pot of ₹4,000 to ₹25,000, set by the sum insured, that carries forward if unused. Joy pays up to its ₹3 lakh or ₹5 lakh sum insured and is issued as a three-year policy.

Can I get maternity cover with a 1-year waiting period?

Yes, on two plans we've read. Aditya Birla Activ Yuva's Worldwide Yuva Maternity Cover lets you choose a 1-year wait and pays ₹1 lakh to ₹2 lakh for one delivery. Star Super Star's 12-month maternity option pays ₹30,000 a delivery. ICICI Lombard Elevate's 24-month wait can be reduced to 12 on a family floater.

Is the newborn covered on these plans?

Yes, with limits. Aspire Titanium+ covers the newborn from day one. Care Joy covers the baby from birth to 90 days. Star Super Star covers the newborn from birth to the end of the policy year, up to ₹2 lakh on ₹5 lakh to ₹25 lakh cover and ₹5 lakh above that. Activ Yuva's newborn cover is a separate option of ₹50,000 to ₹2 lakh for the first 90 days.

Can I buy maternity insurance after getting pregnant?

You can buy a policy, but it won't pay for the delivery you're expecting, because even the shortest maternity wait is longer than what's left of the pregnancy. Star Super Star's Women Care option lets a pregnant woman buy with her 12-week and 20-week scans and covers the newborn, not the delivery. Check your employer's group policy for the delivery itself.

Does the maternity wait carry over if I get married after buying?

On some plans, yes. Activ Yuva's maternity add-on credits a wait you served as a single policyholder to the spouse you add later, and Aspire's Future Ready option passes your served waits, M-iracle included, to a newly married spouse added within 90 days of the marriage. On any other plan, ask before you buy whether a spouse added later inherits your served wait.
