What the numbers say about Star Health

The settlement ratio is the weaker of the two figures: across health insurers it sits inside a narrow band, so it rarely separates a good insurer from a poor one. The complaint rate does the work. It runs from 4.2 at Bajaj General to 173.6 at Navi General, roughly 41 times. Star Health sits at 53.9, toward the weaker end of that range.

Neither figure describes a policy. What decides your claim is the wording you bought: the waiting periods, the room-rent rule, the sub-limits and what you disclosed when you applied.

Which Star Health plan is worth a look?

Of the seven Star plans we have read, two stand out. Young Star, for buyers aged 18 to 40, makes pre-existing conditions wait 12 months and carries no co-payment. Super Star is Star's flagship: any room in the base cover, no mandatory co-payment and no maximum entry age.

Star Comprehensive and Family Health Optima are older designs with a capped room, so a room upgrade cuts the bill proportionately, except medicines, implants and tests. Read the room-rent row on any Star quote before you compare prices.

How do I get a copy of my Star Health policy?

Ask Star. Its policy wording lists a toll-free number, 1800 425 2255, and a 24-hour line, 044-69006900, and points policyholders to the Star Health mobile app. Keep your policy number and registered mobile number ready; without them the call cannot get past identification.

Making a Star Health claim

IRDAI requires a cashless decision within 1 hour of the request, planned or emergency, with final authorisation at discharge within 3 hours (Master Circular on Health Insurance Business, 29 May 2024). If an authorisation passes the hour with no query raised, that is a breach you can escalate.

Servicing your Star Health policy

If you already hold a Star Health policy, these are its official servicing routes. The numbers and links are Star Health’s own, current as of our last check; if you want a second pair of eyes on a claim or a renewal decision, an nyvo advisor handles it with you.

Star Health questions, answered

Is Star Health insurance good?

Star Health settles 89.3% of claims and draws 53.9 complaints per 10,000 claims, ranking 28 of 30 on complaints. The complaint figure is the one that separates insurers – across the market it spans roughly 41 times, while settlement ratios sit within a few points of each other. Neither number describes a specific policy; the wording decides your claim.

What is the Star Health claim settlement ratio?

89.3%, as a weighted average of the last three financial years from IRDAI published data, which ranks Star Health 25 of 31 health insurers. Read it alongside the complaint figure rather than on its own.

How do I make a Star Health claim?

Cashless at a network hospital needs pre-authorisation from the hospital insurance desk, 48 hours ahead for a planned admission. IRDAI requires the insurer to decide a cashless request within 1 hour, planned or emergency, and to grant final authorisation within 3 hours of the discharge request. Our Star Health claim guide covers the full workflow, the document checklist and the escalation ladder if it stalls.

How many Star Health plans has nyvo reviewed?

7. Each one is read from the insurer's own policy wording and prospectus rather than from marketing material, and each page states what the plan does not cover as plainly as what it does.

What is the Star Health customer care number?

Star Health's customer care and claim helpline is 1800-425-2255, and its website is www.starhealth.in. Claims can also be emailed to support@starhealth.in. For a stuck claim, the escalation ladder in our Star Health claim guide runs from the insurer's grievance cell up to the IRDAI portal and the Ombudsman.

How do I check my Star Health claim status?

Track a Star Health claim on its online portal (linked above under "Managing your Star Health policy"), or call 1800-425-2255 with your claim or policy number. If the status stalls past the IRDAI-mandated window, that delay is itself grounds to escalate.

How do I renew my Star Health insurance policy?

Renew on Star Health's official renewal portal (linked above) using your policy number, ideally before the due date so cover and accrued waiting periods carry over unbroken. A policy renewed within the grace period stays continuous; one that lapses can reset waiting periods, so the renewal date matters more than most people are told.

How do I find Star Health network hospitals for cashless treatment?

Star Health publishes its cashless network on its own site (linked above); check it before a planned admission, because empanelment changes and a hospital cashless last year may not be this year. Ring the hospital's insurance desk to confirm it is currently active for Star Health before you travel.

How do I complain to Star Health?

Write to Star's grievance desk first: its policy wording lists gro@starhealth.in and grievances@starhealth.in, and the toll-free number 1800 425 2255. IRDAI expects a resolution within 14 days. If that does not happen, register the complaint on IRDAI's Bima Bharosa portal, and after that the Insurance Ombudsman, which is free.

Is Star Health the same as Star Health and Allied Insurance?

Yes. Star Health and Allied Insurance Company Limited is the full legal name, as printed on every Star policy wording, and Star Health is the name it trades under. It is a standalone health insurer, so it does not sell motor or life insurance.

Whether Star Health suits you depends on the wording, not the ratio

We read the policy before recommending it, and we handle the claim when it comes. If you are weighing Star Health against another insurer, talk it through first.
