Is Niva Bupa good? Complaints, claim record and who it suits

Niva Bupa's plans are stronger than its service record. It settles 93.3% of claims, just above the 93% we look for, but draws 35.4 complaints per 10,000 claims, 23rd of the 30 health insurers with a complaint figure (IRDAI published data, three-year average, as of March 2026). Its ReAssure and Aspire wordings are among the broadest we've read.

What do Niva Bupa customers complain about?

Mostly claims, as with every health insurer. Niva Bupa's grievance disclosure for 2025-26 (Form NL-45, for the year to 31 March 2026) lists 6,399 complaints: 4,675 about claims (73.1%), 1,042 about the policy itself (16.3%), 288 about refunds and 262 about premiums.

The policy-servicing share is the one to notice. At 16.3% it's a bigger slice than at Star Health, where it was 12.0% in Star's own 2025-26 disclosure, so a noticeable share of Niva Bupa's complaints are about running the policy rather than paying a claim. The claims share, meanwhile, is close to the market's: IRDAI's Annual Report 2024-25 says that of the grievances reported under general insurance business on its Bima Bharosa portal, the majority were related to claims (69 per cent).

For scale, Niva Bupa registered 16,01,362 claims in 2025-26 and closed the year with 44 complaints open, all of them less than 15 days old.

Who is Niva Bupa good for, and who should look elsewhere?

With Niva Bupa, the variant matters more than usual: ReAssure 3.0 Black is the only ReAssure 3.0 variant with no room-category cap and no room co-pay, and Aspire's best terms sit on Titanium+. Check which variant a quote is for before you compare it.

Niva Bupa can suit you if

  • You want no room-category cap and no disease sub-limits. ReAssure 2.0 Titanium+, ReAssure 3.0 Black and Aspire Titanium+ have neither.
  • You expect to claim more than once. ReAssure Forever refills the base cover an unlimited number of times once your first claim has been paid.
  • You're 18 to 35 and want cover to compound. Aspire's Booster+ carries unused cover forward up to 10 times your base if you join in that band; the cap drops to 5 times at 36 to 45 and 3 times after that.
  • You're buying late. ReAssure 2.0 and ReAssure 3.0 accept adults up to 99.

Look elsewhere if

  • You're planning a family. ReAssure 2.0 and 3.0 exclude maternity outright, and Aspire Titanium+'s maternity pot starts at ₹4,000 a year on ₹3 lakh cover and reaches ₹25,000 only at ₹50 lakh and above.
  • You want consumables paid as standard. On ReAssure and Aspire they're excluded unless you buy Safeguard or Safeguard+, and Health Companion has no way to add them.
  • You're 61 or older and want a low co-pay. Senior First takes 61 to 75, but half of every claim is yours unless you buy the co-pay down when you first buy.
  • Fewer complaints matter more to you than plan features. At 35.4 per 10,000 claims, Niva Bupa sits in the weaker third of the health insurers we track.

Niva Bupa questions, answered

Does Niva Bupa cover maternity?

On some plans, and not much. ReAssure 2.0 and 3.0 exclude it with no rider to add it. Aspire Titanium+ builds it in after a 9-month wait, but the yearly pot is ₹4,000 on ₹3 lakh cover, rising to ₹25,000 at ₹50 lakh and above, carried forward only if unused. If maternity matters, compare plans on the payout, not the wait.

Which Niva Bupa plan should I buy?

It depends on age and need. On the wordings we've read, ReAssure 3.0 Black and ReAssure 2.0 Titanium+ give the broadest hospital cover, with no room cap and unlimited refills once the first claim is paid. Aspire Titanium+ suits buyers under 36 who want Booster+ to grow fastest. Senior First is only for 61 to 75 and carries a large co-pay.

What do Niva Bupa customers complain about?

Claims, then the policy itself. Of the 6,399 complaints Niva Bupa registered in 2025-26, 4,675 (73.1%) were about claims and 1,042 (16.3%) were policy-related, according to its NL-45 disclosure for the year to 31 March 2026. The policy-related share is higher than Star Health's 12.0% in the same year.

How do I complain about Niva Bupa?

Start with Niva Bupa's own grievance desk and get a complaint reference number. The insurer has to resolve a grievance within 14 days (IRDAI Master Circular on Protection of Policyholders' Interests, 5 September 2024). If it doesn't, or the reply doesn't settle it, register the complaint on IRDAI's Bima Bharosa portal or call 155255. After that, the Insurance Ombudsman is free, and its award binds the insurer.
