Waiting Period in Health Insurance Explained: BP & Diabetes Covered After 30 Days?
4 min 25 sec · 17 October 2026 · nyvo
Paid your premium for years, renewed on time, and the claim still got rejected? Usually the reason is a waiting period, or something missed in the proposal form. In this Hinglish video, nyvo explains the 3 waiting periods every health insurance policy has: the initial 30-day waiting period (accidents are covered from day 1), the 2-year specific illness waiting period for conditions like cataract, piles and hernia, and the 3-year pre-existing disease (PED) waiting period. It also covers how to reduce the PED waiting period to 2 years or 1 year, which plans cover asthma, BP, cholesterol and diabetes after the first 30 days through an add-on, why every answer in the proposal form matters, and why buying young and fit helps.
What this video says
- Shadab of nyvo explains why a claim can be rejected even after years of paying premiums on time: the policy conditions were not read, or were not explained properly when the policy was sold.
- The video explains three types of waiting period. The first is 30 days, when only accidents are covered; after it, illnesses such as dengue, malaria and viral infections are covered up to the sum insured.
- The second is a 2-year specific illness waiting period for slow-growing conditions such as cataract, piles and hernia; some insurers do not have it, but the video calls that mainly a selling point, because these conditions rarely need surgery at once.
- The third and most important is the 3-year pre-existing disease waiting period, which applies to any past medical history, hospitalisation or ongoing condition such as BP, diabetes or cholesterol declared in the proposal form.
- The pre-existing wait can be cut to 2 years or 1 year on plans such as Care Ultimate, Care Supreme and Aditya Birla Activ One, and some plans (Care Ultimate, Care Supreme, HDFC ERGO Optima Secure Plus, Aditya Birla Activ One Max) cover asthma, BP, cholesterol and diabetes after 30 days through an add-on, which the video says anyone with these conditions should take (nyvo's current data: Optima Secure Plus's add-on covers up to three of the four; Care Ultimate's and Activ One Max's options cover seven conditions, and Activ One Max's starts from day one).
- Answer every proposal form question truthfully, including alcohol, smoking and past medical history, and upload past reports, so that a claim is not rejected for non-disclosure.
- Waiting periods apply only once; after they are served every claim is paid up to the cover, so the video advises buying while young and fit (correction: serving the waiting periods does not remove the policy's exclusions or other terms).
Figures to check against today's data

0:00Sochiye, aap saalon tak aapka premium pay karte hain, aur aap apna time pe bhi renewal kar dete hain, phir bhi aapka claim reject ho jata hai? Iska reason yeh hai, aapne condition properly padhe nahi honge, ya toh jahan se aapne policy li hai, unhone aapko properly explain nahi ki hogi. Isliye aapka claim reject ho sakta hai.
0:18Welcome to nyvo. Mera naam Shadab hai. Aaj main aapko teen important condition ke baare mein baat karunga.
0:24Jo policy khareedna chahte hain unke liye bhi, aur jo existing policy hai jinke paas, unke liye bhi. Toh zaroor aapki policy mein check karein.
0:31First, waiting period kya hai, aur yeh kyun hota hai policy mein? Jab koi health insurance leta hai, toh usko kuch cheezon ke liye waiting apply hota hai. Kya cheez hai yeh? Jaise ki cataract, piles, yeh jo standard conditions hote hain, jo most of the companies mein hote hain.
0:44Waiting period teen types ke hote hain. Pehla, 30 days waiting period. Ismein aap koi bhi claim nahi kar sakte, lekin aap accident ke related day-1 se aapko covered hoga.
0:53Jaise ki, agar God forbid, agar aapka accident ho jata hai, toh jo bhi kharcha aata hai hospitalisation ka, jitna aapne coverage choose kiya hai, poora aap us cheez ko claim kar sakte hain. Lekin aapki policy ko 30 din hone ke baad aap kuch cheezon ke liye policy mein claim kar sakte hain, jaise dengue, malaria, viral infection, aisi cheezon ke liye aap policy mein aapke sum insured tak aap claim kar sakte hain.
1:14Second waiting period 2 saal ka hota hai, jisko bolte hain specific illness, jaise ke cataract, piles, hernia. Lekin kuch insurance company mein ye 2 saal ka waiting period nahi hota hai. To aapke mind mein ye chal raha hoga, kaun sa better option hoga.
1:28Lekin aapko ghabrane ki zaroorat nahi hai, kyunke ye slow-growing disease hai. Slow-growing disease mein aapko instantly surgery required nahi hoti hai, aur ye sirf ek attraction hota hai policy buy karne ke liye.
1:39Teesra waiting period, jo sabse important hai, pre-existing, jo uska waiting period hai 3 saal ka. Pre-existing disease kya hai? Jo bhi aapki past medical history hai, past mein hospitalization, aur aapki koi bhi bimari hai, jaise ke current medicine aap kha rahe ho ya nahi kha rahe ho, jaise ke BP, diabetes, cholesterol, aisi koi bhi bimari hai, usko proposal form mein aapko clearly mention karna hai aur saath mein...
2:03Jo bhi aapne proposal form mein aapki medical history declare ki hai, wo aapko teen saal baad covered hogi as a pre-existing disease.
2:11Kya aapka teen saal ka waiting period aap reduce kar sakte ho? Haan, do saal ya ek saal ke liye kar sakte hain aap. Jaise ki Care Ultimate mein, Care Supreme mein, aur Aditya Birla mein Activ One mein aap kar sakte ho.
2:22Kuch plan mein aapki teen saal ka pre-existing disease hum 30 din baad bhi cover kar sakte hain, jaise asthma, BP, cholesterol, diabetes. Ye saari bimari kuch plans mein covered hai, jaise ki Care Ultimate mein bhi hai, Supreme mein bhi hai, aur HDFC Optima Secure Plus mein bhi hai, aur Aditya Birla Activ One Max mein bhi hai.
2:40Agar ye bimari kisi ko bhi hai, ye add-on lena zaroori hai, kyunki iske complications bohot hi critical hote hain, toh add-ons lena bohot hi important hai. Humne saare waiting period ke baare mein discuss kar liya.
2:51Ab most important thing ab aata hai, jo aapke hath mein hai aur humare hath mein hai: proposal form. Proposal form mein jo bhi cheez puchi gayi hai, jaise alcohol kitna consumption karte hain wo bhi humein batana hai, aap smoking... Aap smoking karte hain wo bhi batana hai. Aapki past medical history kya hai wo bhi batana hai.
3:05Saari cheezein, each and everything properly disclose karna hai, aur aapke paas koi bhi past medical history ki reports bhi hain, wo bhi aapko upload karna hai, aapke tareeke se koi mistake na ho aur insurance company aapko non-disclosure karke aapka claim rejection na kare.
3:22Yeh waiting period aapko ek hi baar apply hote hain. Jaise ki aapka do saal waiting period specified illness ke liye khatam ho gaya, teen saal ke liye pre-existing ke liye waiting period khatam ho gaya, to aapke liye each and every claim aapke coverage ke hisaab tak poora aapko claim milega.
3:36So policy lene se pehle do cheezon ka dhyan rakhna hai: jo humne teeno waiting periods ke baare mein humne discuss kiya wo aapko dhyan rakhna hai, aur most important, proposal form mein jo jo question poochhe gaye hain properly each and everything ka properly truly aapko answer dena hai.
3:50One thing to note: jab aap young hote ho, fit hote ho, utni jaldi aapko policy leni hoti hai, kyunki aapka waiting period waived ho jata hai, aur jab aapko health insurance ki need hoti hai us time pe aapko waiting period ke liye wait nahi karna padega. Aur aap jitna aapka kharcha hai 100% tak aapke sum insured tak aapko milta hai.
4:08nyvo ka ek hi kaam hai: properly medical history disclose karana, proposal form mein saari cheezein properly mention karana, jo ki aapke claims mein kabhi bhi problem na aaye. Apne liye sahi plan aur waiting periods jaane ke liye hamare nyvo ke advisors ke saath aap hamare saath call book kar sakte hai. Link description mein hai.
