HDFC ERGO Optima Secure Plus Review 2026: Does ₹10L Cover Really Become ₹50L?

7 min 49 sec · 25 September 2026 · nyvo

HDFC ERGO Optima Secure Plus gives 2X cover from day one, adds 100% of the base cover at every renewal and has no room rent limit. So does a ₹10 lakh policy really grow to ₹50 lakh, and is the bonus safe after a claim? Working from the brochure, the customer information sheet and the policy wording, the video covers the plan's features, three add-ons (ABCD Chronic Care, Optima Well-being for OPD and Parenthood for maternity), waiting periods, key exclusions, real premiums for a Mumbai couple, an aggregate deductible that can cut the premium by up to 40%, and HDFC ERGO's claim record from IRDAI data.

What this video says

  • nyvo reviews HDFC ERGO Optima Secure Plus from its brochure, policy wording and customer information sheet: no room rent limit, no sub-limits, no co-payment, and non-medical consumables included, which the video puts at 10% to 15% of a bill (nyvo's current data: consumables are roughly 5% to 15% of a bill, by industry estimates).
  • The Secure Benefit doubles cover from day one and the Infinite Benefit adds 100% of the base cover at every renewal, so ₹10 lakh is ₹20 lakh on day one and then ₹30, ₹40 and ₹50 lakh; the video says this bonus is guaranteed and is not cut after a claim, and restoration is unlimited.
  • The video covers three add-ons: ABCD Chronic Care, which it says covers asthma, BP, cholesterol and diabetes after 30 days instead of 3 years; Optima Well-being, for unlimited in-person GP consultations with network doctors; and Parenthood, which it says pays ₹50,000 or ₹1 lakh for maternity after a 2-year wait (correction: ABCD Chronic Care covers up to three of the four conditions, from day 31, and Parenthood covers maternity expenses of ₹50,000 to ₹2 lakh rather than a fixed lump sum).
  • The video lists standard exclusions (professional adventure sports, substance abuse and illegal acts, war, cosmetic surgery) and waiting periods of 30 days at the start, 2 years for specified illnesses such as cataract and hernia, and 3 years for pre-existing disease, and says only the four ABCD conditions can be shortened (nyvo's current data: the current filing also allows the pre-existing wait to be cut to 24 or 12 months, set only by the selling channel when the policy starts, and ABCD covers up to three of the four conditions).
  • The video says the premium depends on age and city, with HDFC using six tiers, and for a 30-year-old couple in Mumbai it quotes about ₹18,500 for ₹10 lakh and ₹19,700 for ₹20 lakh, including a year-wise discount of 21%, then 18%, then 10% (nyvo's current data: these premiums are the video's own quotes, not nyvo's, and the tier count is not in nyvo's data; the discount is up to 21% for a first-time buyer and up to 18% at renewal, with no 10% step on record).
  • The video says a ₹25,000 or ₹50,000 aggregate deductible cuts the premium by 22.5% or 40%, and a corporate employee can claim that deductible from the employer's policy (nyvo's current data: up to 22.5% for ₹25,000 matches; nyvo has no figure for ₹50,000; whether an employer's policy pays the deductible depends on its wording).
  • Quoting IRDAI data for FY 2025-26, the video gives HDFC ERGO a 98.1% claim settlement ratio, an amount settlement ratio above 96% and fewer than 5 complaints per 10,000 claims (nyvo's current data: 97.8% of claims settled and 8.3 complaints per 10,000 claims, IRDAI three-year data as of March 2026; nyvo publishes no amount settlement ratio for health insurers).
  • The video says the plan suits buyers who want high cover without fine print, and corporate employees using the deductible, and does not suit those who need instant cover beyond four diseases, a shorter specified-illness wait, or the lowest premium (correction: ABCD Chronic Care covers up to three of the four conditions).

Figures to check against today's data

In the videonyvo's current data
0:18the policy wordings, which is a 60-plus page documentNot in nyvo's published data (nyvo records no page counts).

2:44But if you buy a fresh policy, 30 day cooling off period will be applied. This is the 30-day initial waiting period (accidents covered from day one). 'Cooling off' usually means the free-look period, which is a different rule.
3:06Apart from any other than that disease has to go through 3 years of waiting period and there is no option to reduce that.nyvo's record says the current filing does allow the pre-existing wait to be cut to 24 or 12 months, but only a selling channel can set it, only when the policy starts, and it cannot be removed later.
3:54HDFC divides India in six tiers ... Mumbai is considered as tier two by HDFC.Not in nyvo's published data.
4:13it will cost you around 18,500 for 30 year old couple. If I talk about 20 lakh coverage, it will cost about 19,700.As quoted in the video on 25 Sep 2026; not nyvo's published premium data. nyvo's own data: about ₹12,800 a year for a 30-year-old individual, ₹10 lakh cover, Zone 1 (720 quotes, April 2026); for a couple with the eldest aged 30, ₹10,000 to ₹20,500 for ₹10 lakh and ₹14,000 to ₹29,000 for ₹20 lakh, across cities and nyvo's four health picks. nyvo's review of this plan quotes about ₹22,616 for a two-member floater aged 35 and 30.
4:44For the first year, you are getting 21% discount. In year, you are getting 18% discount. And from third year onwards, you get 10% discount.Favourable claims experience discount: up to 21% for a first-time buyer and up to 18% at renewal. nyvo has no record of a 10% step from year three.
4:58And you from third year onwards, your premium can see an increase of 10%.On the video's own figures, going from a 21% discount to a 10% discount raises the premium by about 14% (0.90 ÷ 0.79 = 1.139), before any age or rate change.
5:10if you take 25,000 or 50,000 of aggregate deductible, you get 22.5% or 40% discount respectively.Value Buy: a ₹25,000 deductible cuts the premium by up to 22.5% on a base cover under ₹25 lakh, which matches. nyvo has no figure for a ₹50,000 deductible; a ₹3 lakh deductible cuts it by up to 65%.
5:33for corporate employees, you can get HDFC's top plan at 40% discount by taking 50,000 aggregate deductible and claim that amount from your corporate insurer.nyvo's answer on a corporate plan funding the deductible is 'often yes', with the advice to confirm how the plan's wording counts it. The 40% figure for ₹50,000 is not in nyvo's published data.
5:55HDFC stands out in claim settlement ratio at 98.1%. They settled 10 lakh 85,000 claims out of 11 lakh 9,000 claims.97.8% (IRDAI data, three-year weighted average, latest available as of March 2026). The counts spoken (10,85,000 of 11,09,000) also work out to 97.8%, not 98.1%.
6:07And this is the most amazing performance among other players. On nyvo's three-year data, Go Digit (99.0%) and Narayana Health (98.5%) are above HDFC ERGO (97.8%). HDFC ERGO's 8.3 complaints per 10,000 claims is low, but not the lowest: Bajaj General records 4.2.
6:09If you consider amount settlement ratio, that was also above 96%.Not in nyvo's published data (nyvo publishes no amount settlement ratio for health insurers).

0:03Welcome to nyvo insurance Policy Analysis, where we tell you from the documents what is there in the plan and what is not. Today, we will talk about HDFC ERGO, a famous secure plan. I have with me the policy brochure of the plan, the policy wordings, which is a 60-plus page document, and customer information.

0:23We have gone through it thoroughly, so we can explain you the plan in just next 5 minutes. First, we will talk about features of the plan and add-ons. Then, what are the waiting period and key exclusions? Then, what are the premiums of the plan and its performance versus IRDAI?

0:36Let's talk about the features of the plan. There is no room rent limit in the plan. Also, there is no kind of sub-limits. Any doctor-recommended treatment can be done. Third, there is no co-payment in the plan.

0:46You don't have to pay any part of the bill. Fourth, non-medical consumables are included. Gloves, syringes, etc. These cost 10 to 15% of your bill, and these are included in the plan.

0:57Now, let's come to the attractive feature, the bonus. There are two kind of bonus that you get. One, secure benefit. It makes your cover 2x from day one. Buy a policy of 10 lakhs, you get 10 lakhs additional.

1:09Second, infinite bonus. At every renewal, they will provide you 100% of base sum insured. Now, here's the math. Buy a 10 lakhs policy, it's 20 lakhs from day one. On each renewal, it will further increase by 10 lakhs.

1:20So, once you renew, it will become 30, then 40, then 50, and it will keep on increasing. Now, the most attractive part. Let's say in year three, you have 40 lakhs of cover. You use complete 40 lakhs. You think that your bonus is utilized.

1:34No. Come in next year, on renewal, your overall sum will be 50 lakhs. So, it is a guaranteed bonus. There is no deduction from the bonus if you use it last year. Further, this policy has unlimited restore.

1:45What it does is that if you use your whole sum insured, you use your base, you use your secure benefit, you use your infinite benefit, and then there is another hospitalization in the same year. Then you get additional base amount insured for that hospitalization.

1:59Now coming to add-ons. I will talk about three key add-ons that are available. First is ABCD chronic care. If you have asthma, BP, cholesterol, or diabetes, then this plan offers you to cover that instantly.

2:14Once you take this add-on, you are covered with 30 days. Otherwise, you will have to wait for 3 years.

2:18Second is Optima Wellbeing where you can actually download their HDFC ERGO and go to their partner's doctor for physical consultation. This provides unlimited physical consultation for general physicians, but only with their network doctors.

2:33Third is parenthood which provides a lump sum of 50K or 1 lakh during maternity. Thing to note is that this add-on comes with 2 years of waiting period.

2:42This plan has standard waiting period. But if you buy a fresh policy, 30 day cooling off period will be applied. Then there is a 2 year specified illness waiting period which includes slow growing disease like cataract, hernia, etc. which are not covered till 2 years. And for any other pre-existing disease, you have to wait for 3 years.

3:01But I talk about how you can reduce for ABCD, that is asthma, BP, cholesterol, and diabetes. Apart from any other than that disease has to go through 3 years of waiting period and there is no option to reduce that. This plan doesn't offer any reduction in specified illness. So waiting period or standard waiting period are fixed.

3:21Coming to key exclusions. I want you to be aware of standard exclusions that apply across most of the insurance. First is professional adventurous sports. Any injury due to that is not covered. Second is substance abuse and any illegal activity.

3:35Third, any kind of war, etc. is not covered under health insurance. Any kind of cosmetic surgeries are also not covered. These are standard across health insurance, but it is important for you to know so you are aware before taking any policy.

3:50The premium of the policy is dependent upon two things. One, the age and second, the location. Overall, HDFC divides India in six tiers and based on those tiers, the premium differ. HDFC increases premiums every year.

4:01So, as your age increases, the premium increase. Now, let me come to a real example. Let's talk about Mumbai. Mumbai is considered as tier two by HDFC. If I talk about 10 lakh policy premium for this plan, it will cost you around 18,500 for 30 year old couple.

4:17If I talk about 20 lakh coverage, it will cost about 19,700. You see, the difference between increasing the coverage is not that much. And this is due to already HDFC providing infinite bonus as well as secure benefit.

4:33Now, let's deep dive into the different discounts that you get with this plan. While these are first year premium, note that with Optima Secure Plus, HDFC has launched year wise discount. For the first year, you are getting 21% discount. In year, you are getting 18% discount.

4:49And from third year onwards, you get 10% discount. So, while first year premium as I discussed was 18,500, that includes 21% discount. And you from third year onwards, your premium can see an increase of 10%. Now, to control the premium of HDFC policy, there is a super hack that nobody will tell you about.

5:10You can take aggregate deductible. Now, if you take 25,000 or 50,000 of aggregate deductible, you get 22.5% or 40% discount respectively. This is one of the largest discount for taking an aggregate deductible in a policy. And this initial 25,000 or 50,000, either you pay it from your pocket or you can also take it from your corporate policy.

5:33So, for corporate employees, you can get HDFC's top plan at 40% discount by taking 50,000 aggregate deductible and claim that amount from your corporate insurer.

5:43Now, let's discuss HDFC ERGO performance by IRDAI data. And let me be clear, these are the numbers that are given to IRDAI, the regulatory body. And these are not the numbers we are taking from anywhere else. So, HDFC stands out in claim settlement ratio at 98.1%.

5:59They settled 10 lakh 85,000 claims out of 11 lakh 9,000 claims. And this is the most amazing performance among other players. If you consider amount settlement ratio, that was also above 96%. And if I could go to complaints, for every 10,000 claims, they have less than five complaints.

6:20This is FY25-26 data. So, HDFC stands out clearly on the performance metrics related to claim settlement as well as complaints. Now, we have done our policy analysis.

6:31But coming to the key question, who is this plan for? Anyone who is looking for a solid plan without any hidden fine print with higher coverage can take this plan. And anyone who is working in a corporate and looking for high discount of 40% with 50k deductible can look for this plan. Now, coming to who is this plan not for?

6:52This plan provide instant cover for just four diseases. Anyone who is looking for instant cover for any other disease or looking to reduce their specified illness waiting period, this plan isn't for them. Second, the premium of this plan are slightly higher compared to other plan in this market. We will keep on doing such policy analysis by looking into the actual documents, the brochures, the customer information sheets, and the policy wording and tell you in 5-10 minutes complete details about those plans.

7:22If you want to find out if this plan is suitable for you or not or if any other plan is suitable, you can always go to nyvo.in and book a call with nyvo advisor.
