Best ₹50 Lakh Term Insurance Plans (2026): Is It Enough?
Who ₹50 lakh term insurance suits, which top-rated plans sell it, what changes below ₹1 crore of cover, and how to raise your cover later.
Is ₹50 lakh term insurance enough?
₹50 lakh of term insurance is enough when your family's worked-out need comes to about ₹50 lakh: the income they would lose, plus loans and big future costs, minus the savings and existing life cover they can rely on. That fits a household with modest expenses and few loans, a buyer with fewer working years left, or someone adding cover beside an existing policy. For a young family with a home loan, the number usually comes out higher.
Work your number out before you pick a plan. Our guide to how much cover you need walks through the calculation, and the term cover calculator does it for you. If it lands closer to ₹1 crore, our ₹1 crore guide shows what that cover costs.
Individual life insurance has attracted nil GST since 22 September 2025, so there is no GST to add on top of the premium the insurer confirms.
Which top-rated term plans sell ₹50 lakh of cover?
All five plans in nyvo's best term plans for 2026 sell ₹50 lakh of cover. HDFC Life, ICICI Pru and Bajaj Life set ₹50 lakh as their minimum; Tata AIA and Axis Max Life start at ₹5 lakh.
| Plan | Minimum cover | Paid early on a terminal illness, on ₹50 lakh | Worth knowing | Claim settlement ratio |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tata AIA Sampoorna Raksha Promise | ₹5 lakh | ₹25 lakh (half), with every future premium waived | The salaried discount starts at ₹50 lakh | 99.5% |
| HDFC Life Click 2 Protect Supreme Plus | ₹50 lakh | The full ₹50 lakh, if diagnosed before 80 | Cover can rise by up to 50% on marriage, a child or a home loan | 99.6% |
| Axis Max Life Smart Term Plan Plus | ₹5 lakh | The full ₹50 lakh | 15% lower premiums for women | 99.3% |
| ICICI Pru iProtect Smart Plus | ₹50 lakh | The full ₹50 lakh; the policy then ends | Cover can rise by 100% on a home loan, 50% on marriage, 25% per child | 98.5% |
| Bajaj Life eTouch II | ₹50 lakh | The full ₹50 lakh | Life Stage Upgrade can add cover before 45 | 99.2% |

LIC's Digi Term also starts at ₹50 lakh, with entry from 18 to 45. LIC settles 98.3% of individual death claims (IRDAI data, weighted average of the last three financial years, latest available as of March 2026).
What changes below ₹1 crore of cover?
At ₹50 lakh you give up a feature or two that begins at ₹1 crore, and some riders stop at a lower figure. The premium is lower, but the policy does not behave like exactly half of a ₹1 crore plan.
- The advance on claim intimation. Tata AIA and ICICI Pru pay ₹3 lakh when a claim is registered only on cover of ₹1 crore or more. Axis Max Life's Insta Payment is paid on smaller covers too, in an amount that rises with the cover, though not in the first policy year.
- Rider size. Bajaj Life's critical illness rider cannot exceed the base sum assured, and Axis Max Life caps its critical illness and accident riders at the base cover or ₹1 crore, whichever is lower. With ₹50 lakh of base cover, those riders stop at ₹50 lakh.
- Tata AIA's salaried discount starts at ₹50 lakh of cover, which is worth checking if you are salaried and your need is close to that figure.
Who is ₹50 lakh of cover a good fit for?
₹50 lakh suits buyers whose calculation lands there, not buyers trying to trim a premium.
- A household with modest monthly costs and no large loans, where ₹50 lakh replaces the income your family would lose for the years they need it.
- A second policy beside cover you already hold. Among the five plans compared here, HDFC Life, ICICI Pru and Bajaj Life start at ₹50 lakh, while Tata AIA and Axis Max Life sell smaller covers.
- A buyer in their late 40s or 50s, with fewer working years left to replace.
- A homemaker's cover, sized to what it would cost the family to replace the work they do; see term insurance for a housewife.
Can you increase ₹50 lakh of cover later?
On some plans, yes: they let you raise cover at life events instead of buying a new policy at an older age. Read the conditions before you buy, because most increases have to be used within set windows.
- HDFC Life Click 2 Protect Supreme Plus: up to 50% more cover on marriage, a child or a home loan, with no fresh medicals.
- ICICI Pru iProtect Smart Plus: 100% more on a home loan, 50% on marriage and 25% for each child, on Regular Pay policies.
- Bajaj Life eTouch II: Life Stage Upgrade, opted for at purchase and used within six months of the event and before 45. It adds up to 50% or ₹50 lakh on marriage, 25% or ₹25 lakh for a first or second child, and 25% or ₹50 lakh on a home loan, to a total of 100% of the original cover, subject to fresh underwriting.
Otherwise, extra cover means a second policy, priced at your age and health on the day you buy it.

FAQs
Is ₹50 lakh term insurance enough for a family?
It can be. ₹50 lakh is enough when the income your family would need, plus loans and large future costs, minus the savings and existing life cover your family can rely on, comes to about ₹50 lakh. For a young family with a home loan and children the calculation usually lands higher; our how much cover guide shows how to work it out.
Which term plans allow cover below ₹50 lakh?
Among nyvo's top-rated plans, Tata AIA Sampoorna Raksha Promise and Axis Max Life Smart Term Plan Plus both start at ₹5 lakh. HDFC Life Click 2 Protect Supreme Plus, ICICI Pru iProtect Smart Plus and Bajaj Life eTouch II start at ₹50 lakh.
Do I get the advance claim payout on ₹50 lakh of cover?
Not on Tata AIA or ICICI Pru, where the ₹3 lakh advance on claim intimation needs cover of ₹1 crore or more. Axis Max Life's Insta Payment is paid on smaller covers too, in an amount that rises with the cover, and not in the first policy year.
Does the terminal illness payout change at ₹50 lakh?
On HDFC Life, Axis Max Life, ICICI Pru and Bajaj Life the whole ₹50 lakh can be paid early on a terminal illness, because each plan's cap sits above ₹50 lakh or, on ICICI Pru, there is no cap. HDFC Life's benefit applies to a diagnosis before 80. Tata AIA pays half the sum assured early, ₹25 lakh on ₹50 lakh of cover, and waives every future premium.
Can I increase my ₹50 lakh cover later?
On some plans. HDFC Life Click 2 Protect Supreme Plus, ICICI Pru iProtect Smart Plus and Bajaj Life eTouch II each let you raise cover on events such as marriage, a child or a home loan, within their own limits. Otherwise you would buy a second policy at your age and health at that time.
