PRUHealth Protect Review 2026: Benefits and Waiting Period
PRUHealth Protect from Prudential HCL Health Insurance covers Rs 2 lakh to Rs 5 lakh. Waiting period, room rent limit, restoration and loyalty addition, from the filed prospectus.

PRUHealth Protect is the entry variant of Prudential's PRUHealth product, selling at ₹2 lakh, ₹3 lakh, ₹4 lakh or ₹5 lakh. It is one of two Prudential plans that tie you to a room category. It is the only one marketed below ₹5 lakh, though Edge and Signature can both be issued at ₹2 lakh, ₹3 lakh and ₹4 lakh too, so ask for those quotes before assuming Protect is your only option at that size.
What you get, and what it costs you
The room rule is the clause to read first
The brochure states the room eligibility as "Stay in a Single Private AC room". That is a room category limit rather than a rupee cap, and PRUHealth Signature and PRUHealth Edge both allow any room except a suite.
Why a category limit matters: on most policies, taking a room above your eligibility triggers a proportionate deduction on the charges that vary with room category, such as nursing, operation theatre and the surgeon's and consultants' fees. Under IRDAI's norms on associated medical expenses (IRDAI/HLT/REG/CIR/151/06/2020, 11 June 2020), medicines, implants and diagnostics are paid in full regardless of the room.
The brochure states the eligibility and stops there, but the filed prospectus does not. It sets out the deduction explicitly: if you are admitted to a room of a higher category than your entitlement, the payable amount is reduced in the ratio of the room rent of your entitled category to the room rent actually charged. So a proportionate deduction does apply on Protect.
In practice a single private AC room is adequate in most hospitals. The exposure is the admission where it is not available and you are moved up.
Restoration is unlimited, but starts at the second claim
"From the second claim onwards, your base sum insured is restored by 100% unlimited times during the same policy year, even for the same illness."
Unlimited refills and same-illness cover are both good, and better than many plans offer. The limit is the start point: a first claim that exhausts a ₹3 lakh cover gets no refill, because restoration has not engaged. On a small sum insured that is a realistic scenario rather than an edge case.
PRUHealth Signature, on the same filing, restores from the first claim.
The loyalty addition is the slowest of the three
"Your cover increases by 10% of the base sum insured every year, up to 100%, regardless of whether you make a claim."
Growing regardless of claims is the better kind of growth, and it is a real advantage over a no-claim bonus that resets when you claim. But 10% a year to a 100% ceiling means a ₹5 lakh cover takes ten years to reach ₹10 lakh. Edge adds 50% a year and Signature 100% a year, both under the same UIN.
The same brochure sells a faster path as an add-on, which the next section covers.
The cover, clause by clause
| PRUHealth Protect | |
|---|---|
| Sum insured | ₹2 lakh, ₹3 lakh, ₹4 lakh or ₹5 lakh |
| Room rent | Single private AC room, a category limit |
| Restoration | 100%, unlimited, from the second claim, same illness included |
| Loyalty addition | 10% of base a year, to 100%, regardless of claims |
| Pre-hospitalisation | 60 days |
| Post-hospitalisation | 180 days |
| In-patient and ICU care | Covered |
| Modern treatments | Covered; the brochure does not list which |
| Domiciliary hospitalisation | Hospital-level treatment at home, covered |
| Home care | Treatment at home, covered when advised |
| AYUSH | Covered |
| Day care | Covered up to the sum insured, with no 24-hour admission requirement |
| Organ donor expenses | Covered |
| Virtual consultation | Unlimited, with a general practitioner |
| Mind care | Four virtual consultations with a psychologist |
| Road ambulance | Available in network; up to ₹5,000 per hospitalisation outside it |
| Prudential Health Check-up | Age and gender based, with a doctor consultation |
| Pre-existing disease waiting period | 36 months (prospectus, Excl01) |
| Initial waiting period | 30 days (prospectus, Excl03) |
| Specific disease waiting period | Applies (prospectus, Excl02); the schedule of listed conditions is in the prospectus |
| Sub-limits | Not in the brochure; the prospectus sets out the sequence in which a deductible, a sub-limit and a co-payment are applied |
For an entry plan this base cover is broad. Unlimited virtual GP consultations, organ donor expenses and home care are not universal at this level.
The add-ons are where the plan changes shape
Everything above is base cover. The brochure then lists a separate Customise with add-ons section, and two entries there speak directly to the weaknesses above:
- Day 1 Instant Increase of Cover. "Choose an additional 50%, 100%, 200% or 300% of your base sum insured." That addresses the small starting cover immediately rather than over a decade.
- Loyalty Addition Plus. "Enjoy a 100% increase in your base sum insured on every renewal, up to 500%." That is ten times the base loyalty addition's rate and five times its ceiling.
Also in that section: the Prudential Select Network, which is where Protect's co-payment actually lives. "Receive treatment at a Prudential Select Network Hospital and enjoy a 15% discount on your premium. If treatment is taken outside this network, a 20% co-payment will apply." The 20% is the other side of the 15% discount, not a standing rule on the base plan. A separate Co-Payment add-on lets you choose a level to cut premium, and an Annual Aggregate Deductible does the same.
The brochure's own disclaimer is explicit that these "are optional or conditional benefits and are available only on payment of additional premium and/or fulfilment of specified criteria". So price the plan you would actually buy, not the base.
Who Protect suits
Someone buying their first policy on a limited budget. A ₹5 lakh cover you hold beats a ₹20 lakh cover you cannot afford, and the waiting periods only run while you are covered.
Someone who needs cover below ₹5 lakh. Protect markets itself there, but the prospectus shows Edge and Signature also offer ₹2 lakh, ₹3 lakh and ₹4 lakh, so ask for those quotes too. Guardian starts at ₹5 lakh.
Not someone buying their main family cover, unless the growth add-ons are in the quote. At ₹2 lakh to ₹5 lakh with a 10% annual addition, the base plan is a starting position, and the room category limit narrows what is paid on a large surgical bill.
About Prudential Health Insurance
The insurer behind this plan is Prudential HCL Health Insurance Limited, carrying IRDAI registration number 172 and CIN U65120MH2025FLC457866. IRDAI granted its certificate of registration on 29 June 2026, making it India's eighth standalone health insurer (Business Standard).
"Standalone health insurer" is a category rather than a compliment. It means the company writes health, personal accident and travel cover rather than health alongside motor and home, as Star Health, Care Health, Niva Bupa and Aditya Birla Health also do.
It sells four plans, filed as two products:
| Marketed as | Product name in the brochure | UIN |
|---|---|---|
| PRUHealth Protect | PRUHealth | PRUHLIP27035V012627 |
| PRUHealth Signature | PRUHealth | PRUHLIP27035V012627 |
| PRUHealth Edge | PRUHealth | PRUHLIP27035V012627 |
| PRUHealth Guardian | PRUHealth Guardian | PRUHLIP27036V012627 |
Protect, Signature and Edge share one UIN and one product name, so they are three variants of a single filing rather than three competing products. Guardian is separately filed. A UIN is the Unique Identification Number IRDAI assigns to each filed product, and it is the only reliable way to tell whether two things being sold to you are actually two things.
As of September 2026 there is no published claim settlement ratio and no complaint ratio. IRDAI compiles both over completed financial years; registered in June 2026, this company's first full year ends 31 March 2027, so the annual report for 2026-27 is the earliest either figure can appear. That is a fact about the age of the insurer rather than a criticism, but it removes the two measures buyers normally use to separate insurers, and it means anyone quoting you a settlement ratio for Prudential is quoting something that does not exist. What is left to judge is the wording, which is why this page spends its time there.
FAQs
What is the sum insured on PRUHealth Protect?
₹2 lakh, ₹3 lakh, ₹4 lakh or ₹5 lakh. It is the only Prudential plan marketed below ₹5 lakh, but not the only one sold there: Edge and Signature can both be issued at ₹2 lakh, ₹3 lakh and ₹4 lakh. Guardian starts at ₹5 lakh.
Does PRUHealth Protect have a room rent limit?
Yes, a room category limit: a single private AC room. The filed prospectus confirms that a costlier room reduces the payable amount in the ratio of your entitled room rent to the room rent actually charged, which is a proportionate deduction on room-linked charges.
When does restoration start on PRUHealth Protect?
From the second claim onwards. It then refills 100% of the base sum insured an unlimited number of times in the policy year, including for the same illness.
Does PRUHealth Protect have a co-payment?
Not in the base cover. Co-payment appears among the add-ons in two forms: a level you choose in order to reduce your premium, and a 20% co-payment that applies outside the Prudential Select Network if you have taken that network's 15% premium discount.
How fast does cover grow on PRUHealth Protect?
By 10% of the base sum insured each year, to a ceiling of 100%, whether or not you claim. That is the slowest of Prudential's three PRUHealth variants. An optional Loyalty Addition Plus add-on raises it to 100% a year up to 500%.
Is PRUHealth Protect a separate product from PRUHealth Edge?
No. Protect, Edge and Signature all carry UIN PRUHLIP27035V012627 under the product name PRUHealth, so they are three variants of one filed product.
nyvo does not distribute Prudential HCL Health Insurance plans. This page is an explainer read from the insurer's own brochure. Booking a call gets you help comparing what is on this page against the plans nyvo does advise on; it is not a route to buying this one.
PRUHealth Protect, at a glance
| What it is | the entry variant of Prudential's PRUHealth product. Product name PRUHealth, UIN PRUHLIP27035V012627, shared with PRUHealth Signature and PRUHealth Edge. |
|---|---|
| Sum insured | ₹2 lakh, ₹3 lakh, ₹4 lakh or ₹5 lakh, and the prospectus confirms those four. Edge and Signature can also be issued at ₹2 lakh, ₹3 lakh and ₹4 lakh, although both are marketed from ₹5 lakh, so Protect is not the only option at a small cover. |
| Room rent | a single private AC room. A room category limit. PRUHealth Guardian carries a similar but slightly wider one, a single private OR shared AC room. |
| Restoration | 100% of the base sum insured, restored unlimited times in the same policy year, from the second claim onwards, even for the same illness. |
| Loyalty addition | cover increases by 10% of the base sum insured every year, up to 100%, regardless of whether you claim. |
| Pre and post hospitalisation | 60 days before, 180 days after. |
| Co-payment | not part of the base cover. It appears twice among the add-ons, as a level you choose to cut premium and as the 20% that applies outside the Prudential Select Network. |
| Growth add-ons | Day 1 Instant Increase of 50%, 100%, 200% or 300% of base, and Loyalty Addition Plus at 100% of base a year up to 500%. Neither is priced in the brochure. Its Loyalty Addition Plus blurb says the growth comes at no additional premium, while the disclaimer says add-ons need additional premium and/or specified criteria, so get the cost on a quote. |
| Also in the base cover | modern treatments, domiciliary hospitalisation, home care, AYUSH, day care, organ donor expenses, unlimited virtual GP consultations, four mind care consultations, road ambulance. |
| Waiting periods | the brochure omits them; the filed prospectus sets the pre-existing disease wait at 36 months and the initial wait at 30 days. |
