Optima Secure vs Optima Secure Plus: Which Should You Buy in 2026?

Optima Secure Plus adds an uncapped annual bonus and unlimited restoration. Optima Secure caps both. Everything else, including room rent and waiting periods, is identical.

Key takeaways
Buy Optima Secure Plus if you intend to hold the policy for more than four or five years, because the uncapped bonus is the whole difference and it only compounds if you stay.
Buy Optima Secure if you want the same clean clauses without paying for growth you will not use, and you are comfortable with a cover that tops out at three times the base.
Do not choose between them on room rent, co-payment or waiting periods. Those are identical, and anyone selling you one over the other on those grounds has not read either wording.
If your budget only reaches a ₹5 lakh base, Optima Secure is the only one of the two you can buy, because Optima Secure Plus starts at ₹10 lakh.

Optima Secure Plus is the better buy if you plan to hold the policy for more than four or five years, because it adds 100% of your base cover every year with no ceiling. Optima Secure gives you the same clauses and the same 2X day-one cover, but its bonus stops once it has added another 100% of the base. On a ₹10 lakh policy held a decade, that is ₹1.1 crore of cover against ₹30 lakh.

What actually separates Optima Secure and Optima Secure Plus?

Three things, and only three. Everything else in the two wordings is the same.

The bonus, which is the real reason to pay more

Optima Secure Plus carries what HDFC ERGO's prospectus calls the Infinite Benefit: 100% of the base sum insured added every year, with no upper cap. Optima Secure carries the Plus Benefit instead, which adds 50% of the base at each renewal and stops once it has added 100%.

That sounds like a difference of degree. It is a difference of kind. A ₹10 lakh Optima Secure earns ₹10 lakh of Plus Benefit, reaches that ceiling at the start of year three, and then stops forever. A ₹10 lakh Optima Secure Plus keeps adding ₹10 lakh a year and passes ₹1 crore of total cover around year ten. The two plans separate slowly and then enormously.

Restoration, once a year against unlimited

Optima Secure reinstates the full base sum insured once in a policy year. Optima Secure Plus reinstates it an unlimited number of times. This only matters once a year's claims have exhausted the cover, which on a ₹20 lakh day-one cover takes a severe year rather than simply a busy one.

One thing to know before you pay the Plus premium for this alone: Optima Secure sells Unlimited Restore as a paid add-on, so the gap can be closed on Optima Secure. Price that route as well.

Worth being precise about what restoration does not do on either plan: it refills the cover for your next claim, and it never raises the ceiling on the bill that emptied it.

Where each plan starts

Optima Secure sells from ₹5 lakh upward, in tiers of 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 50, 100 and 200 lakh. Optima Secure Plus starts at ₹10 lakh. If ₹5 lakh is the most you can commit to today, the comparison is over: Optima Secure is the only one of the two available to you.

Everything else is identical

This is the part most comparisons of these two plans get wrong by padding. On room rent, co-payment, disease sub-limits, day care, pre and post hospitalisation, air ambulance, entry age and all three waiting periods, the two plans match exactly. Both also carry the Secure Benefit, which doubles the base sum insured from day one at no extra premium. Both sit on the same insurer, so the settlement ratio, the complaint ratio and the hospital network are the same numbers.

What happens to a ₹10 lakh base over ten years?

nyvo does not publish premiums for either plan, and any figure quoted without your age, city, family size and sum insured would be guesswork. Ask for both quotes on the same sum insured before you decide. What the two plans do with that cover is what follows.

Both plans start in the same place, because the Secure Benefit doubles the base on day one for each of them. A ₹10 lakh policy is ₹20 lakh of usable cover in year one, on either plan.

From year two they separate:

Start of yearOptima SecureOptima Secure Plus
Year 1₹20 lakh₹20 lakh
Year 2₹25 lakh₹30 lakh
Year 3₹30 lakh₹40 lakh
Year 5₹30 lakh₹60 lakh
Year 10₹30 lakh₹1.1 crore

Optima Secure reaches its ceiling at the start of year three, two renewals in, and stays there for as long as you hold it. From year three onwards the plan stops growing, because the Plus Benefit has nothing left to add. Optima Secure Plus has no ceiling to reach. That gap is the entire case for the higher premium, and it is a case that only pays off if you keep the policy.

Which one is right for you?

A couple in their early thirties buying their first family policy. Optima Secure Plus. You have thirty years of holding ahead of you and the uncapped bonus is worth more to you than to anyone else on this page.

A family that needs cover today on a tight budget. Optima Secure, at a ₹5 lakh or ₹10 lakh base. The clauses that decide whether a claim is paid are identical, and a clean ₹10 lakh policy you can actually afford beats a better one you drop after two renewals.

Someone in their late fifties. The gap matters less, because there are fewer renewals left for the bonus to compound through. Price the two and take Optima Secure unless the difference is small.

Read the clause pages behind this comparison: room rent limits, restoration benefit and no-claim bonus.

What neither plan does well

Neither covers maternity in the base plan. Both sell the Parenthood add-on, which carries its own waiting period, so it is not a decision you can defer until you need it. Routine outpatient consultations are not covered on either unless you add Optima Wellbeing. Neither carries a wellness or premium-discount programme of the kind Aditya Birla and Niva Bupa build in, so a healthy year earns you nothing back.

FAQs

Is Optima Secure Plus better than Optima Secure?

Yes, on cover growth and on restoration. Optima Secure Plus adds 100% of your base sum insured every year with no cap where Optima Secure adds 50% a year and stops at 100%, and it restores the cover without limit where Optima Secure restores it once. The clauses that decide a claim, room rent, co-payment and sub-limits, are identical.

Is the extra premium for Optima Secure Plus worth it?

nyvo does not publish premiums, so get both quotes on the same sum insured. What decides it is how long you will hold the policy. The uncapped bonus needs years to separate from the capped one, so if you expect to hold for five years or more it is usually worth it, and if you are buying short-term cover it is not.

What is the difference between the Secure Benefit and the Infinite Benefit?

The Secure Benefit doubles your base sum insured from day one and appears on both plans. The Infinite Benefit adds 100% of the base every year with no ceiling and appears only on Optima Secure Plus.

Does Optima Secure have a room rent limit?

No. Both Optima Secure and Optima Secure Plus pay room rent and ICU charges at actuals, with no category cap and no proportionate deduction.

Can I upgrade from Optima Secure to Optima Secure Plus?

Ask HDFC ERGO before you assume it. A move between plans at the same insurer is usually handled at renewal and your accumulated waiting periods should carry across, but the terms are set by the insurer and not by the wording of either plan.

Which one has the better claim settlement ratio?

Neither. Both are HDFC ERGO plans, so they share a 97.8% claim settlement ratio and 8.3 complaints per 10,000 claims on IRDAI's three-year weighted average. Settlement ratios are published per insurer, not per plan.
