The death claim process at a glance

If you have just lost a family member, you do not need to do all of this today: intimate Shriram Life – a phone call is enough to start the clock – then gather documents over the following week. A death claim is made by the nominee or legal heir, not the policyholder. Shriram Life is a private life insurer serving mass and rural markets.

The step-by-step death claim process

1

Intimate Shriram Life within 24–48 hours

Intimation registers the claim and starts the clock. It does not require documents. Call 1800-103-6116 with the policyholder's name, policy number, date and place of death, and a one-line cause, then note the claim reference number. Follow up in writing to claimsupport@shriramlife.in, or register the claim online at the shriramlife.com claim portal, so you hold an acknowledgement.

File first, gather documents next
2

Gather the claim documents

Collect the pack below and send it together, with every field of the claim form filled – claims stall far more often on a missing paper than on a disputed fact. Keep a copy of everything, and submit through the online portal, a Shriram Life branch, or registered post. Which extras apply depends on the cause of death: medical records for illness, and FIR with post-mortem report where the death was accidental or unnatural.

3

Verification, and what an "early claim" means

A claim within three years of policy issue or revival is an early claim and is routinely investigated – that is standard practice, not suspicion of you. Track progress with the claim reference on 1800-103-6116, answer any query within 7 days, and never sign blank papers. Most delays here are an incomplete response, not a dispute.

Up to 45 days if investigated

Settlement

Shriram Life must settle within 15 days of intimation, or 45 days where the claim is investigated (IRDAI Master Circular, September 2024). Miss either and the insurer owes interest at the bank rate plus 2% from intimation, paid automatically. Payout is by NEFT to the nominee's account, so the bank details and cancelled cheque must match the nominee's name exactly.

How to check your Shriram Life claim status

Once a claim is registered, Shriram Life Insurance Company Limited gives it a claim or intimation number, and that number is what every status channel asks for. Keep it with the policy number and track the claim on the Shriram Life claims portal, or call 1800-103-6116. A cashless request usually moves within hours; a reimbursement claim is measured in days, and the insurer has 15 days from the last document to decide, or 45 where it orders an investigation.

  • Online: myaccount.shriramlife.com/CustomerPortal/ClaimIntimation - sign in with the policy or claim number.
  • Phone: 1800-103-6116 - fastest route when a hospital is waiting on an authorisation.
  • Email: claimsupport@shriramlife.in - put the claim number in the subject line so it threads to the right file.
  • At the hospital: for a cashless claim, the insurance desk can see the authorisation status on the TPA portal before you can.

If the status has not moved for several days, or it reads “query raised” without anyone telling you what is missing, that is the point to stop waiting and start the escalation ladder. A query is not a rejection - it is a request for a document, and claims are lost by leaving them unanswered.

Death claim document checklist
Original policy document (a copy or e-policy works if it is lost)
Death claim form (claimant's statement)
Death certificate from the municipal authority
Nominee's photo ID (Aadhaar / PAN / Passport)
Nominee's address proof
Cancelled cheque or NEFT mandate in the nominee's name
Hospital records and doctor's certificate of cause of death, if death was due to illness
FIR, panchnama and post-mortem report, if death was accidental or unnatural
Driving licence and vehicle RC, if death was in a road accident while driving
Appointee's KYC and relationship proof, if the nominee is a minor
Succession or legal-heir certificate, if no nominee is named
Embassy-attested death certificate and passport copy, if the death occurred abroad
There is no strict deadline to file a death claim, but intimate as early as you can – late intimation by itself is not a valid reason to deny a genuine claim.

Frequently asked questions

Fifteen days from intimation, per IRDAI's September 2024 Master Circular. If the claim is investigated – common within the first three years – it must be settled within 45 days of intimation. Miss either deadline and the insurer owes interest at the bank rate plus 2%. Most delays are a missing document rather than a dispute.

Check the latest IRDAI Annual Report for Shriram Life's current death-claim settlement ratio. The ratio is the percentage of death claims paid out of all claims received in a financial year – a key signal of how reliably an insurer pays nominees. If a claim is ever delayed or rejected, ask for the reason and the exact policy clause in writing – the escalation ladder above exists for precisely that.

No. Under Section 45 of the Insurance Act, a policy cannot be called in question on any ground whatsoever after three years from issue, revival or rider addition – fraud included. Before three years, fraud, non-disclosure of a material fact – an undeclared illness or tobacco use – and a lapsed policy are the most common reasons a death claim fails.

Most term and life policies, including Shriram Life's, exclude death by suicide within the first 12 months of inception or revival; the premiums paid (or a portion) are typically refunded instead. After 12 months, suicide is generally covered – always check the specific policy wording.
