Key takeaways
Most family plans let a child join a parent's floater from 90 or 91 days old, and a few from birth or 16 days.
A newborn is covered from birth only if the policy includes newborn cover; none of the four plans in nyvo's best health plans for 2026 builds it in.
Children can stay on a family policy until 24 to 30, depending on the plan, and several plans move them to their own policy with credit for waiting periods served.
A floater shares one sum insured across the family, so review the cover when a child joins rather than letting the same amount stretch further.
Check how many children a floater takes before you buy: Care Supreme allows 2, Activ One MAX 4 and ReAssure 3.0 Black up to 5.

How do you get health insurance for a child in India?

Most parents insure a child by adding them to a family floater policy, which most plans allow from 90 or 91 days old. A child can usually stay on that policy until 24 to 30, depending on the plan, and then move to their own policy. A baby is covered from the day of birth only if your policy includes newborn cover, which usually comes with a maternity benefit.

The details vary more than most parents expect. The age a child can join, the number of children a floater takes and the age a child has to leave all differ by plan, and this guide sets them out side by side.

From what age can a child be covered, and until when?

Most family plans take a child from 90 or 91 days old and keep them until somewhere between 24 and 30. Plans that move a child to their own policy with continuity carry forward the waiting periods already served.

PlanChild can join fromChild can stay until
HDFC ERGO Optima Secure Plus91 days25; moves to their own policy at 26 with continuity
Care Supreme90 days24; moves to their own policy at 25 with continuity
Niva Bupa ReAssure 3.0 Black91 days30
Aditya Birla Activ One MAX91 days on a floater; 5 years on an individual policy25 on a floater
ICICI Lombard Elevate91 days on a floater; from 6 years on their own policy, with an adult as proposer30 on a floater
Star Health Young Star91 days25; then their own policy, keeping the waiting periods served
Star Health Assure16 days, on a floater25; a child who turns 26 at renewal can stay until they marry
Tata AIG MediCare Premier91 days25; a separate policy at 26 with continuity

Eligibility from each plan's prospectus or policy wording, as recorded in nyvo's policy database.

Floaters also limit how many children fit on one policy. Care Supreme takes 2 children with 2 adults, Activ One MAX 4 children with 2 adults, and ReAssure 3.0 Black up to 5 children within 6 members. Star Health Young Star and Star Health Assure take up to 3 children, and Tata AIG MediCare Premier up to 3 dependent children.

Is a newborn covered from birth?

Only if your policy includes newborn cover. Adding a baby from 91 days is standard, but paying for a baby's care from the day of birth needs a benefit written for it, and on most plans that benefit sits inside maternity cover.

None of the four plans in nyvo's best health plans for 2026 includes newborn cover. Care Supreme, ReAssure 3.0 Black and Activ One MAX have no maternity benefit, and the Parenthood add-on on Optima Secure Plus excludes newborn cover. Plans that do cover a baby from birth or the first days include:

PlanHow the newborn is coveredMaternity wait
Niva Bupa Aspire Titanium+A newborn added under the built-in M-iracle maternity benefit is covered from day one9 months
Oriental Happy Family Floater (Gold)Newborn covered from day one up to the full sum insured, on every tierMaternity is not offered on Gold
National Insurance New National Parivar MediclaimBaby covered from birth under the built-in maternity benefit3 years
Care JoyNewborn covered from birth to 90 days under a dedicated maternity policy9 months (Joy Today) or 24 months (Joy Tomorrow)
ICICI Lombard ElevateNewborn cover available alongside the maternity add-on24 months, reducible to 12

Newborn and maternity terms from each plan's prospectus or policy wording, as recorded in nyvo's policy database.

A maternity limit often has to pay for the delivery and the baby's early care together, so check the limit before counting on it. Our newborn insurance checklist explains that catch.

What happens if you add your child after 90 days?

A child added after the newborn window joins as a new member, and plans differ on whether waiting periods already served carry across. Care Health's Ultimate Care is explicit about it: a baby added within 90 days of birth inherits the waiting periods already served on the policy, while a baby added at 91 days or later starts the clocks afresh.

Before adding a child, ask your insurer whether the child must be declared within a set number of days, whether mid-term addition is allowed or it must wait for renewal, and whether the child's waiting periods start fresh. Star Health Comprehensive, for example, lets you add a newborn mid-term on a proportionate premium if you inform Star within 60 days.

When does a child need their own policy?

A child needs their own policy once they pass the plan's age limit for dependent children, between 24 and 30 on the plans above, or stop meeting its other conditions for dependants. Plans that offer continuity move the child across with credit for the waiting periods already served, so the child does not start those waits again.

  • Care Supreme: own policy at 25, with continuity.
  • HDFC ERGO Optima Secure Plus: own policy at 26, with continuity.
  • Tata AIG MediCare Premier: a separate policy at 26, with continuity.
  • Star Health Young Star: own policy at 25, carrying the waiting periods already served.
  • Niva Bupa ReAssure 3.0 Black and ICICI Lombard Elevate: children can stay on the floater until 30.

Floater or individual cover for your child?

A family floater shares one sum insured across the family and usually costs less than separate policies; individual cover gives the child a sum insured of their own. The trade-off is that a large claim on a floater draws on the cover the whole family relies on that year. Two age rules matter for young children: Activ One MAX sets 5 years as the minimum age for an individual policy, and Elevate covers a child under 6 only on a floater. Our family floater vs individual guide goes through the full comparison.

What should parents check before buying?

Five checks decide whether a policy works for a family with children.

  1. Child entry age, and whether the plan covers a newborn from birth or only from 91 days.
  2. How many children the floater takes, if you plan more than one.
  3. The exit age, and whether the child moves to their own policy with continuity.
  4. Newborn and vaccination limits, which often sit inside the maternity limit.
  5. Outpatient cover. Most childhood doctor visits do not involve a hospital stay. Optima Secure Plus covers routine consultations only through its Optima Wellbeing add-on, and ReAssure 3.0 offers WellConsult+ for outpatient costs.

FAQs

At what age can a child be added to health insurance?

Most plans take a child from 90 or 91 days old: Care Supreme from 90 days, and HDFC ERGO Optima Secure Plus, Niva Bupa ReAssure 3.0 Black and Aditya Birla Activ One MAX from 91 days. A few start earlier: Star Health Assure takes children from 16 days on a floater, and Niva Bupa Aspire Titanium+ from birth.

Is my newborn covered under my health insurance?

Only if your policy includes newborn cover, and none of the four plans in nyvo's best health plans for 2026 does. Plans such as Niva Bupa Aspire Titanium+ and Oriental Happy Family Floater cover a newborn from day one, and Care Joy covers a newborn for the first 90 days.

Until what age can my child stay on my family policy?

It depends on the plan: 24 on Care Supreme; 25 on HDFC ERGO Optima Secure Plus, Aditya Birla Activ One MAX and Tata AIG MediCare Premier; and 30 on Niva Bupa ReAssure 3.0 Black and ICICI Lombard Elevate. Star Health Assure lets a child who turns 26 at renewal stay until they marry.

Can I buy a separate health insurance policy for my child?

Yes, from a certain age on some plans. Aditya Birla Activ One MAX allows an individual policy from 5 years, and ICICI Lombard Elevate from 6 years with an adult as proposer. Below those ages, those plans cover a child on a floater alongside a parent.

Does health insurance cover my child's vaccinations?

Routine vaccinations are usually not part of hospitalisation cover. Some maternity benefits pay for a newborn's first-year vaccinations, often from the same limit as the delivery; ICICI Lombard Elevate's maternity add-on is one example.
