HDFC Life renewal premium: grace period, revival and how to pay

A term plan isn't renewed like health cover; it stays in force as long as each premium is paid. HDFC Life gives 30 days' grace on yearly, half-yearly and quarterly premiums and 15 days on monthly ones (Click 2 Protect Supreme Plus brochure, UIN 101N189V04). Miss that and the policy lapses, though you can revive it within five years.

What happens if I miss the HDFC Life due date?

Nothing, for the length of the grace period. HDFC Life treats the policy as in force for 30 days after a yearly, half-yearly or quarterly due date and 15 days after a monthly one. If a valid claim arises in that window before you've paid, HDFC Life still pays it and deducts the unpaid premium for the policy year.

Once the grace period passes unpaid, a pure term policy lapses with no paid-up value, and your family is not covered. A death on day 31 of an unpaid yearly premium leaves nothing to claim. Return-of-premium versions are different: once a full year's premium is paid they keep a paid-up value rather than lapsing to nothing.

Can I revive a lapsed HDFC Life policy?

HDFC Life lets you revive a lapsed policy within five years of the first unpaid premium, as long as the policy term hasn't ended. You pay every missed premium with interest, currently 9% a year, and HDFC Life decides under its underwriting policy, based on the health information, documents and reports you give it. The rate is reset on 25 February and 25 August each year to the average 10-year G-Sec yield, rounded up to the nearest 0.5%, plus 2%.

Once the policy is revived, its benefits come back in full. One clause restarts: on Click 2 Protect Supreme Plus the 12-month suicide exclusion runs again from the date of revival.

Can I take a break from HDFC Life premiums instead of lapsing?

On Click 2 Protect Supreme Plus, yes. After five policy years with every premium paid, you can ask HDFC Life in writing, at least 30 days before the next policy anniversary (15 days on monthly mode), to defer up to 12 months of premium. Cover continues, there's no extra premium for the option, and a claim in that period is paid after deducting what you deferred. You pay the deferred amount during or at the end of the break.

You can use the break again after a five-year gap, but not in the last year of the premium-paying term or on a single-premium policy. Women can also use it after two policy years, during a pregnancy or within six months of delivery, or within six months of a spouse's death.

How do I pay my HDFC Life premium?

HDFC Life lists more routes than most insurers. The quickest is Quick Pay on its website, which needs only your policy number and date of birth.

Online: Quick Pay, My Account or the HDFC Life app

Net banking from 75-plus banks, credit and debit cards, card EMI, UPI up to ₹2 lakh (your bank's limit applies) and a UPI QR code. You can switch on auto-debit while you pay.

Bank transfer

Quick Pay generates a one-time virtual account for NEFT, RTGS or IMPS. It's valid for 5 days, and the amount must match exactly or the money is refunded.

Split payment

Quick Pay lets you pay one premium across several cards or accounts, from ₹50 a part, inside the validity window it shows. If the full premium isn't paid in time, the parts are refunded.

Bharat BillPay and apps

PayZapp, Paytm or any Bharat BillPay app or bank: choose Insurance, then HDFC Life, and enter the policy number and date of birth.

Auto-debit

Register online (Quick Register, or a standing instruction while paying) or with a NACH mandate, and the premium is taken on the due date.

Cash

Up to ₹49,999 a transaction and ₹1 lakh a year per customer, at Bharat BillPay outlets, ICICI Bank and Axis Bank branches, and Airtel Payments Bank outlets.

Cheque or demand draft

At an HDFC Life branch (9.30 am to 3.30 pm on weekdays, 9.30 am to 1 pm on Saturdays) or at ICICI Bank and Axis Bank branches until 3 pm, drawn in favour of "HDFC Life Policy No." followed by your policy number. The banks don't take post-dated cheques.

A convenience fee charged by HDFC Life's payment partner on a credit card isn't refunded.

If someone other than the policyholder pays, HDFC Life asks for a third-party payment declaration, and for ₹1 lakh or more, the payer's identity and address proof.

HDFC Life renewal premium, questions answered

What is the grace period for HDFC Life term insurance?

30 days for yearly, half-yearly and quarterly premiums, and 15 days for monthly ones, on Click 2 Protect Supreme Plus (brochure, UIN 101N189V04). The policy stays in force during the grace period. Pay inside it and nothing changes; miss it and a pure term policy lapses with no paid-up value.

Is my family covered if I die during the grace period?

Yes. HDFC Life says it will honour a valid claim that arises during the grace period even before the premium is paid, and will deduct the due and unpaid premium for that policy year from the payout. Once the grace period ends unpaid, a pure term policy has lapsed and there's nothing to claim.

How do I revive a lapsed HDFC Life policy?

Apply within five years of the first unpaid premium and before the policy term ends. You pay all the missed premiums with interest, currently 9% a year, and HDFC Life decides on revival under its underwriting policy, so it may ask for health information or reports. Once revived, the policy's benefits return in full.

Can I pay my HDFC Life premium in cash?

Yes, up to ₹49,999 a transaction and ₹1 lakh a year per customer, at Bharat BillPay outlets, ICICI Bank and Axis Bank branches, and Airtel Payments Bank outlets. Above that, use Quick Pay, net banking, UPI or a cheque. HDFC Life's own branches take cheques and demand drafts rather than cash.

Can I take a break from HDFC Life premiums?

On Click 2 Protect Supreme Plus, yes. After five policy years you can ask, at least 30 days ahead, to defer up to 12 months of premium while cover continues, with any claim in that period paid minus the deferred amount. You can use it again after a five-year gap, but not in the last year of the premium-paying term.
