What Super Star covers
These are the terms that decide what you are actually paid when you claim. Room rent, co-pay and restoration do more to shape a settlement than the sum insured does, and they are read from Star Health's own policy wording.
| Feature | This plan | What good looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Co-payment | No mandatory co-payment at any entry age. A voluntary 10% to 50% co-payment can be chosen to cut the premium | No Co-payment |
| Room Rent Limit | Any room in the base cover. A premium-reducing option can step it down to a single private A/C room, shared room or general ward | No room rent capping |
| Disease sub-limit | No disease-wise caps. Modern treatments are paid up to the sum insured; air ambulance is the only base sub-limit at ₹5 lakh a year | No sub-limit |
| No Claim Bonus | 50% of the sum insured for each claim-free year, accumulating to 100%. Unused bonus carries forward; only the part you spend is taken back | 50% each year (Minimum upto 100%) |
| Restoration Benefit | Unlimited restorations of up to 100% each, triggered on partial or full use, usable for all claims including modern treatment | 100% restoration once in a year |
| Pre-Hospitalization | 90 days | At least 60 days |
| Post-Hospitalization | 180 days | At least 120 days |
| Consumables | Not in the base cover. A 68-item consumables option can be added, but only within the first three policy years | Consumables covered |
| Freeze Your Age | Premium stays at your entry age until the first in-patient, day care or AYUSH claim, or until 55 | Included |
| Day-Care Procedures | All day care treatments covered up to the sum insured | Covered without a capped list |
| AYUSH Treatment | Covered, and unusually for Star this plan includes yoga and naturopathy | Included |
| Air Ambulance | Up to ₹5 lakh per policy year | Included |
| Entry age | 18 with no upper limit for adults · 91 days to 25 years for children on a floater | No maximum entry age |
Super Star add-ons you can buy with it
Each of these costs extra and each has its own conditions. Some are genuinely worth it; several exist to patch a gap in the base plan. Ask what each one adds before it goes on your quote.
Super Star discounts you can ask for
Published discounts on this plan. Most are applied at quote stage rather than offered, so it is worth naming the ones you qualify for. Every figure is a ceiling, not a promise - what you actually get depends on the case.
| Discount | Worth | When it applies |
|---|---|---|
| CIBIL score discount | Up to 15% | 2.5% at 701 to 750, 5% at 751 to 800, 7.5% at 801 to 849 and 15% at 850 and above. Available at inception and the first two renewals, for people aged up to 50, and not for NRIs or on instalment premiums. |
| Health questionnaire discount | Up to 10% | 5% plus 5% for completing two lifestyle and habit questionnaires at purchase and again at renewal. Every adult on the policy has to answer. |
| Long-term discount | Up to 10% to 16% | 10% on year two, 12.5% on year three, 14% on year four and 16% on year five. Not available if the premium is paid in instalments. |
| Wellness discount | Up to 20% | Earned through the Star Wellness Program, over 1,000 points a year, and applied to the renewal premium. |
| Co-terminus parents discount | Up to 2.5% or 7.5% | A one-time discount for buying a separate policy for parents or parents-in-law within a month of your own. Their sum insured cannot exceed yours, and it does not apply if they take the Unlimited option. |
| Smart Network discount | Up to 15% | For agreeing to use a named hospital network. Treatment outside it then carries a 15% co-payment, except after an accident. |
| NRI Advantage | Up to 10% | For a non-resident Indian or overseas citizen, on production of identity documents. |

Super Star waiting periods: when each part of the cover starts
Waiting periods run from the day cover began, not from the day you fall ill, and they run in parallel rather than one after another.
| Initial Waiting Period | 30 days |
|---|---|
| Specific Illness | 24 months (12 months with the reduction option, up to age 45) |
| Pre-Existing Disease | 36 months (24 or 12 months with the reduction option; waived for five listed conditions under Quick Shield) |
The named illnesses that wait 24 months
These wait 24 months from the start of your first policy with Star, and can be cut to 12 months with a paid option if everyone insured is 45 or under. An accident is covered from day one. The list below is indicative – the policy wording carries all fourteen categories.
Super Star exclusions: what the plan will not pay for
Every policy carries exclusions, and they are the clauses people read for the first time at claim stage. These are the ones worth knowing before you buy.
Where Super Star falls short
No plan is right for everyone, and a page that only lists strengths is not much use to you. These are the gaps we would raise on a call before recommending it.
Super Star questions, answered
Is there a co-payment on Super Star?
No mandatory one, at any entry age. That is unusual for Star and it is the strongest reason to look at this plan for an older parent, because most of the company’s other products impose 10% or 20% on anyone joining at 61 or above. A voluntary co-payment of 10% to 50% is available if you want a cheaper premium, but that is your choice rather than a condition of cover.
Can I really take any room?
In the base cover, yes: room rent is any room, with no per-day cap and no proportionate deduction on the rest of the bill. What you should check on your own quote is whether the Room Rent Modification option was applied, because that is a premium-reducing option that steps you down to a single private A/C room, a shared room or a general ward. It can only be reversed at the first renewal, so read the schedule before you pay.
How does Freeze Your Age work?
Your premium is calculated on the age you were when you bought the policy and stays there at each renewal, instead of climbing as you get older. It ends at the first paid claim under in-patient, day care or AYUSH treatment, or at 55, whichever comes first. From that point renewals are priced on your actual age. Buy at 25 and stay claim-free and you pay a 25-year-old’s premium for thirty years.
What is the difference between the cumulative bonus and Super Star Bonus?
The cumulative bonus is built in and conditional: 50% of your sum insured for each claim-free year, capped at 100%, and it is reduced by whatever part of it you spend. Super Star Bonus is a paid option and is guaranteed: 100% of the sum insured added at the end of every policy year whether you claimed or not, with no accumulation ceiling at all. Neither is available on the Unlimited sum insured.
Can I shorten the 36-month pre-existing disease wait?
Yes, in two different ways, both bought only at first purchase. The waiting-period reduction option takes it to 24 months or 12 months, paid over three years or two, with the 12-month version limited to people aged 65 or under. Quick Shield goes further for five named conditions – diabetes, hypertension, asthma, hyperlipidaemia and certain coronary artery disease – waiving the wait entirely so only the 30-day initial period applies. Its premium runs for five years, and a claim inside that window lets Star deduct the remaining instalments from the payout.
What does the Unlimited sum insured actually give up?
It removes the ceiling on a claim, but it also switches off everything that exists to grow or refill a ceiling: the cumulative bonus, the automatic restoration, Super Star Bonus and Limitless Care all become unavailable. It also caps who can buy it, since Unlimited and ₹1 crore are only offered to people entering at 65 or younger. For most families a ₹1 crore cover with unlimited restoration behaves similarly and keeps the bonus.

Understand the terms before you commit
A plan page tells you what this policy does. These explain why each term matters and what it costs you when it is missing.
Other Star Health plans we have read
Star Health files these separately, and the terms differ between them. If you are choosing within the range, compare the waiting periods and the exclusions rather than the sum insured.
