02Cover

What Elixir covers

These are the terms that decide what you are actually paid when you claim. Room rent, co-pay and restoration do more to shape a settlement than the sum insured does, and they are read from Niva Bupa's own policy wording.

03Waiting periods

Elixir waiting periods: when each part of the cover starts

Waiting periods run from the day cover began, not from the day you fall ill, and they run in parallel rather than one after another.

Initial waiting period30 days from the start of the first policy, except for an accident
Pre-existing disease36 months of continuous cover
04Exclusions

Elixir exclusions: what the plan will not pay for

Every policy carries exclusions, and they are the clauses people read for the first time at claim stage. These are the ones worth knowing before you buy.

Not coveredIndicative, not exhaustive. Your policy wording is the contract.
01Anything in the first 30 days of the first policy, other than an accident.
02Pre-existing diseases and the listed specified diseases, for the periods set out in the policy wording.
05The honest bit

Where Elixir falls short

No plan is right for everyone, and a page that only lists strengths is not much use to you. These are the gaps we would raise on a call before recommending it.

Worth knowing before you buyNone of these are dealbreakers on their own. They are the trade-offs this plan asks you to accept.
01A higher sum insured or a super top-up is usually better value than a second base policy. Compare both before deciding.
02Waiting periods restart on any increase in sum insured, to the extent of the increase.
03Niva Bupa settles 93.3% of claims and draws 35.4 complaints per 10,000. Both are weaker than the best in the market, and on a product you may not claim on for years that record matters more than the premium.
06FAQs

Elixir questions, answered

What kind of policy is this?

It is indemnity health insurance: it reimburses what the hospital actually charges, up to the sum insured you bought. That is different from a fixed-benefit plan, which pays a set amount whatever the bill comes to, and different again from a top-up, which only starts paying above a deductible.

What are the waiting periods?

Thirty days from the start of the first policy for anything other than an accident, plus the pre-existing and specified-disease periods set out in the policy wording, which is the contract.

Understand the terms before you commit

A plan page tells you what this policy does. These explain why each term matters and what it costs you when it is missing.

Niva Bupa files these separately, and the terms differ between them. If you are choosing within the range, compare the waiting periods and the exclusions rather than the sum insured.
