Axis Max Life Smart Total Elite Protection Plan

Axis Max Life's high-cover term plan, aimed at buyers taking a large sum assured. It starts at ₹20 lakh, runs to age 85 on terms up to 67 years, and carries an accident cover that can be added part-way through. The plan has no return-of-premium version: the whole premium buys cover.

02Cover

What Smart Total Elite Protection Plan does, and what it does not

Term insurance is a narrow product, so the useful question is not how this plan scores against a benchmark – it is what it pays for and what it leaves out. Both lists come from Axis Max Life's own documents.

What this plan does
01Level cover held at the same sum assured for the whole policy term
02Cover can run to age 85, with policy terms up to 67 years
03Accident cover of up to ₹1 crore, addable at any point during the term
04Terminal illness pays out early and every future premium is waived
05Lower premium rates for women a three-year age setback on most premium routes
06A 5% premium discount for staff and agents, 2% on a single premium
What it does not do
01Maturity benefit nothing is paid if you survive the term
02A return of premium version this plan has none
03Any surrender value on terms under 40 years
03Variants

Which variant should you take?

This plan is sold in more than one form, and the choice is made once at purchase. Picking the wrong one is not something you can quietly correct later, so it is worth a minute now.

Base coverMost buyers

Level term cover from ₹20 lakh held flat for the whole term, running to age 85 on terms of 10 to 67 years.

Accident Cover option

An additional sum on accidental death, from ₹50,000 and capped at ₹1 crore. It cannot exceed three times the base cover chosen at outset, and unusually it can be added part-way through the term rather than only at purchase.

04Exclusions

What this plan will not pay for

Every policy carries exclusions, and they are the clauses people read for the first time at claim stage. These are the ones worth knowing before you buy.

Not coveredIndicative, not exhaustive. Your policy wording is the contract.
01Suicide within 12 months of the policy starting or of its latest revival - 80% of the premiums paid is returned, provided the policy is in force.
02The accident cover carries its own exclusions, set out separately in the prospectus.
05The honest bit

Where Smart Total Elite Protection Plan falls short

No plan is right for everyone, and a page that only lists strengths is not much use to you. These are the gaps we would raise on a call before recommending it.

Worth knowing before you buyNone of these are dealbreakers on their own. They are the trade-offs this plan asks you to accept.
01There is no surrender value at all on policy terms under 40 years. Stop paying on a 25-year policy and you walk away with nothing, however many years you have funded.
02No maturity benefit and no return-of-premium option anywhere in the plan. Survive the term and nothing comes back - which is what pure term means, but this plan gives you no alternative.
03The accident cover is capped at three times your base cover and at ₹1 crore, so it cannot be used to top up a small policy into meaningful accident protection.
04Axis Max Life sells three term plans that overlap heavily. This one, Smart Secure Plus and Smart Term Plan Plus all reach age 85 and all start near ₹20 lakh. Get quotes on all three before choosing.
05The complaint volume is 7 per 10,000, several times HDFC Life's 1.33. The claim record is strong at 99.3%, so claims do get paid - the friction is in getting there.
