SBI General Super Health Premier

The middle tier of SBI General's Super Health range, sold at ₹3, ₹5, ₹7 and ₹10 lakh. Room rent is uncapped, reinstatement is unlimited and works for the same illness, non-payable items are picked up by Claims Shield, and the pre-existing wait is 24 months rather than the usual 36. Maternity appears at this tier for the first time.

What Super Health Premier covers

These are the terms that decide what you are actually paid when you claim. Room rent, co-pay and restoration do more to shape a settlement than the sum insured does, and they are read from SBI General's own policy wording.

03Add-ons

Super Health Premier add-ons you can buy with it

Each of these costs extra and each has its own conditions. Some are genuinely worth it; several exist to patch a gap in the base plan. Ask what each one adds before it goes on your quote.

Enhanced ReInsure Benefit
Lifts the reinstatement ceiling from 100% to 200% of the base sum insured while keeping it unlimited in the year and available for the same illness. Worth pricing if you are buying at ₹3 or ₹5 lakh, where a single serious admission can exhaust the base cover.
Enhanced Cumulative Bonus Safeguard
Protects your accrued bonus. If the claims paid in a policy year total ₹1 lakh or less, the bonus does not step down at the next renewal. Without it, one small claim resets the ground you have gained.
Additional Basic Sum Insured for accidents
Doubles the sum insured for hospitalisation caused by an accident, which is the one event no waiting period protects you from.
Domestic help or staff indemnity
Extends ₹50,000 or ₹1 lakh of cover to domestic staff aged 18 to 65, with room rent limited to 2% of that sum insured, ICU to 4%, and day care, AYUSH and modern treatment up to the limit.
Co-payment and aggregate deductible
The two premium-reducing options. A voluntary 10% or 20% co-payment on every claim, or an annual aggregate deductible of ₹1 lakh, ₹2 lakh or ₹3 lakh that you clear before the policy pays anything.

Super Health Premier discounts you can ask for

Published discounts on this plan. Most are applied at quote stage rather than offered, so it is worth naming the ones you qualify for. Every figure is a ceiling, not a promise - what you actually get depends on the case.

DiscountWorthWhen it applies
Walk Healthy BenefitUp to 30%Step counts tracked on the insurer's app convert into a renewal discount. On an individual policy 15 lakh steps in a policy year earns nothing, 22.5 lakh earns 5% and 37.5 lakh or more earns 30%. The percentage is diluted on floater policies as adults are added.
Family individual discountUp to 5%Where two or more members are covered on one individual sum insured policy.
Long-term discountUp to 4% or 6%4% on a two-year policy and 6% on three years. Not available if you pay in instalments.
Co-payment or aggregate deductiblePriced to the optionAccept a 10% or 20% co-payment, or an aggregate deductible of ₹1 lakh, ₹2 lakh or ₹3 lakh, and the premium falls accordingly.

05Waiting periods

Super Health Premier waiting periods: when each part of the cover starts

Waiting periods run from the day cover began, not from the day you fall ill, and they run in parallel rather than one after another.

Initial Waiting Period30 days
Specific Illness24 months
Pre-Existing Disease24 months
Hypertension, diabetes and cardiac conditions not pre-existing and disclosed90 days
Maternity48 months for a single adult, 24 months for every other family combination

The named illnesses that wait 24 months

Payable once the policy has run 24 months without a break; the wait does not apply to an accident. This list is indicative – the prospectus carries the full set of illnesses and surgical procedures.

Indicative listFrom the policy wording. Your own document governs.
01Cataract
02Stones in the kidney, ureter or bladder
03Gallbladder disease including cholecystitis, and pancreatitis
04Piles, fissure, fistula and pilonidal sinus
05Benign tumours, cysts, nodules and polyps, including breast lumps
06Osteoarthritis, osteoporosis and non-infective arthritis
07Enlarged prostate, hernia and hydrocele
06Exclusions

Super Health Premier exclusions: what the plan will not pay for

Every policy carries exclusions, and they are the clauses people read for the first time at claim stage. These are the ones worth knowing before you buy.

Not coveredIndicative, not exhaustive. Your policy wording is the contract.
01An admission arranged mainly to run tests, where no treatment follows
02Surgical treatment of obesity outside the plan's stated bariatric conditions
03Cosmetic or plastic surgery unless it repairs damage from an accident, burn or cancer
04Hazardous or adventure sports
05Treatment for alcoholism, drug or substance abuse
06Treatment for infertility or sterility, and unproven treatments
07The honest bit

Where Super Health Premier falls short

No plan is right for everyone, and a page that only lists strengths is not much use to you. These are the gaps we would raise on a call before recommending it.

Worth knowing before you buyNone of these are dealbreakers on their own. They are the trade-offs this plan asks you to accept.
01There is a 90-day waiting period on every claim for hypertension, diabetes or a cardiac condition unless the condition was pre-existing and you declared it at purchase. Someone who does not disclose to avoid a loading buys themselves a three-month gap in exactly the cover they need.
02Premier is capped at ₹10 lakh. If you want more you must move to Platinum, which starts at ₹10 lakh and is a different price point – so the ₹10 lakh buyer has two plans to compare, not one.
03The aggregate deductible options start at ₹1 lakh. On a ₹3 lakh Premier policy that is a third of the cover, so the discount it buys is not the bargain it looks.
04Post-hospitalisation is 90 days, and only the top Platinum Infinite plan stretches it to 180. Long chemotherapy or rehabilitation schedules will outrun it.
05Maternity is capped at ₹25,000 for a normal delivery and ₹50,000 for a caesarean, behind a wait of 24 months for a family and 48 months for a single adult.
08FAQs

Super Health Premier questions, answered

Is the pre-existing disease waiting period really two years?

Yes. Super Health waits 24 months on a declared pre-existing condition, not the 36 months most Indian indemnity plans use, and that applies on Premier as it does on every plan in the range. On a plan sold at ₹3 to ₹10 lakh, a full year less exposure on a declared condition is the most valuable thing in the policy.

What is the 90-day rule on diabetes, blood pressure and heart conditions?

It is the clause most buyers miss. A separate 90-day waiting period applies to every claim for hypertension, diabetes or a cardiac condition, and it is waived only if the condition was pre-existing and you disclosed it when you bought the policy. Not declaring to dodge a loading therefore costs you three months of cover on the exact risk you are insuring.

How good is the ReInsure Benefit?

Better than most. It reinstates up to 100% of the base sum insured, unlimited times in a policy year, and the prospectus makes clear it applies to related and unrelated illness alike. Many plans restore only for a different illness, which is the restriction that catches people out when the same condition puts them back in hospital. The optional Enhanced version lifts the ceiling to 200%.

What does the Health Multiplier do?

For 37 named serious illnesses it doubles your base sum insured at no extra premium, so a ₹10 lakh Premier policy behaves as ₹20 lakh for cancer, a major transplant or a similar listed condition. It only fires for those conditions – any other claim runs against the ordinary sum insured – and the enhanced amount is used after the base cover.

Are consumables covered?

Yes, through Claims Shield, which is built into the plan and pays non-payable items up to the sum insured. Gloves, syringes, PPE and the rest of the list hospitals bill separately are settled rather than deducted from your claim. Ask any adviser quoting this plan to confirm Claims Shield is on your schedule, because it is the feature that stops a settled claim leaving a bill behind.

How much cover can I buy on the Premier plan?

Premier is sold at ₹3 lakh, ₹5 lakh, ₹7 lakh or ₹10 lakh. Prime and Elite go up to ₹25 lakh on a thinner benefit set, Platinum starts at ₹10 lakh and runs to ₹50 lakh, and Platinum Infinite covers ₹50 lakh to ₹2 crore. If you want more than ₹10 lakh you are choosing a different plan in the range, not a bigger Premier.
